Bible Verses About the Resurrection to Memorize

The resurrection is not one doctrine among many; it is the load-bearing wall. "If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain," Paul wrote — and then announced the fact that holds everything up: "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept." Firstfruits means His resurrection is the first of a harvest. Yours is in that field.

These verses cover both halves of the truth: Christ’s rising in history and the believer’s rising to come. Job, in perhaps the oldest book of the Bible, already knew it — "I know that my redeemer liveth... yet in my flesh shall I see God." Jesus made it personal: "because I live, ye shall live also."

Memorize these and you carry the answer to death itself: a body sown in corruption, raised in incorruption; a trumpet, a shout, and the dead in Christ rising first.

12 Bible verses about resurrection

Each verse below is shown in the King James Version. Read it slowly, then use the note beneath it to see why it is worth carrying with you.

  1. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Christ as "the firstfruits of them that slept" makes His resurrection the guarantee of yours — as in Adam all die, in Christ all shall be made alive.

  2. John 11:25-26

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

"I am the resurrection, and the life" — Jesus claims to be the resurrection in person, not merely its agent.

  3. Job 19:25-26

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

From the depths of suffering Job declares, "I know that my redeemer liveth" — resurrection hope in the Old Testament’s oldest pages.

  4. Romans 8:11

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus dwells in believers and shall quicken your mortal body — resurrection power already resident in you.

  5. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The trumpet, the shout, the dead in Christ rising first — the clearest picture of resurrection day in the New Testament.

  6. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

"We shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye" — the mystery of resurrection transformation in two unforgettable verses.

  7. Philippians 3:20-21

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

Christ shall change our vile body to be fashioned like His glorious body — what resurrection will actually do to you.

  8. John 14:19

Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

"Because I live, ye shall live also" — seven words that chain your future to His empty tomb.

  9. Acts 2:24

Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

It was "not possible" that death should hold Him — Peter’s Pentecost logic is worth carrying word for word.

  10. Romans 6:5

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection — union with Christ guarantees the outcome.

  11. 2 Corinthians 4:14

Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.

He which raised up the Lord Jesus "shall raise up us also" — Paul’s personal confidence, stated as plain fact.

  12. John 5:28-29

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

All that are in the graves shall hear His voice — the universal scope of resurrection, from Jesus’ own lips.

FAQ

Questions about Bible verses on resurrection

What is the main Bible verse about the resurrection?

1 Corinthians 15:20 — "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept" — is the cornerstone resurrection verse, and John 11:25, "I am the resurrection, and the life," is Jesus’ own central claim. Matthew 28:6, "He is risen," announces the event itself.

Where does the Bible say believers will be resurrected?

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 describes the dead in Christ rising at His return, 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 says we shall all be changed "in the twinkling of an eye," and Philippians 3:21 says our bodies will be fashioned like His glorious body. Romans 8:11 grounds it all in the indwelling Spirit.

Did the Old Testament teach resurrection?

Yes. Job declared, "I know that my redeemer liveth... yet in my flesh shall I see God" (Job 19:25-26), Daniel 12:2 speaks of many who sleep in the dust awaking, and Jesus argued resurrection from Exodus itself (Matthew 22:31-32). The hope runs through the whole Bible.
