Bible Verses About Hard Times to Memorize

The Bible never promises an easy road; it promises a present God on a hard one. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" — present tense, present help, in the trouble rather than instead of it. Jesus said it plainly the night before the cross: "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Scripture also insists that hard times are not wasted. Tribulation works patience, patience experience, experience hope. James tells believers to count trials as joy because testing produces endurance. And Paul, who suffered more than most, called his afflictions "light" only because he had weighed them against "a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory."

These twelve KJV verses are the ones believers have gripped in waiting rooms, layoffs, and long nights for centuries. They hold.

12 Bible verses about hard times

Each verse below is shown in the King James Version. Read it slowly, then use the note beneath it to see why it is worth carrying with you.

  1. Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

A very present help in trouble — the first verse to reach for when the ground shifts under you.

  2. John 16:33

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Jesus promises tribulation and commands good cheer in the same breath, because He has overcome the world.

  3. Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

All things working together for good to them that love God — the verse that refuses to let any hard chapter be meaningless.

  4. James 1:2-4

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Counting trials joy because testing works patience reframes hardship as formation rather than mere loss.

  5. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Affliction weighed against an "eternal weight of glory" — Paul’s scale for measuring suffering without despair.

  6. Psalm 34:19

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

"Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all" — honest about the many, confident about the deliverance.

  7. Isaiah 43:2

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

Through the waters and through the fire — God’s presence promised in the hardest passages, not exemption from them.

  8. 1 Peter 5:10

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

After suffering "a while," God Himself will perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you — four promises stacked at the end of the trial.

  9. Romans 5:3-5

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Tribulation, patience, experience, hope — the chain that explains how hard times produce something instead of nothing.

  10. Psalm 121:1-2

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Lifting your eyes to the hills and finding help in the Maker of heaven and earth — the traveler’s psalm for any uphill season.

  11. Nahum 1:7

The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

"The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him" — a hidden gem worth carrying.

  12. Deuteronomy 31:8

And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

He goes before you and will not fail nor forsake you — fear and dismay dismissed by God’s own advance presence.

How to memorize these verses

The best time to memorize verses for hard times is before they arrive — Scripture stored in calm seasons is the supply you draw on in crisis, when concentration is too shattered to learn anything new. Start with Psalm 46:1 and John 16:33, the two shortest and sturdiest. If you are in the middle of a hard season now, lower the bar: one short verse, repeated aloud morning and night, is worth more than an ambitious plan abandoned. The Bible Memory App is free to start and its built-in review means the verses will still be there next year, when you may need them most.

The Bible Memory App turns that practice into a daily habit: type each verse from memory, get instant feedback on every word, and review on a schedule so the verses stay with you for years, not days. It is free to start, and you can add any of the verses above in seconds.

FAQ

Questions about Bible verses on hard times

What is a good Bible verse for hard times?

Psalm 46:1 — "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" — is the classic verse for hard seasons. John 16:33 and Romans 8:28 are equally loved: Jesus has overcome the world, and God works all things together for good to them that love Him.

What does the Bible say about going through difficult times?

Scripture is honest that the righteous face "many" afflictions (Psalm 34:19) and promises God’s presence in them — "when thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee" (Isaiah 43:2). It also says trials produce patience, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-5; James 1:2-4), so hard times are formative, not random.

What psalm helps in hard times?

Psalm 46 ("God is our refuge and strength") and Psalm 121 ("I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills") are the two most-turned-to psalms in difficulty, alongside Psalm 23. Memorizing even the first verse or two of each gives you a foothold for the hardest days.
