The Topical Memory System, often shortened to TMS, is a well-loved Scripture-memory plan developed by The Navigators. Instead of memorizing verses at random, it gathers 60 core verses and arranges them into five topical series of twelve verses each, so you build a foundation of related truths as you go. Since the mid-twentieth century it has helped generations of believers hide God's Word in their hearts in a structured, sustainable way.
What makes the system work is not just the verse list but the habit it builds: learn a verse with its reference, practice recall, and review what you have already learned every day. This page walks through the five TMS series with sample verses from each, gives you a realistic week-by-week cadence, and shows how to work through the system in The Bible Memory App, on your own or with a group.
The basics
What is the Topical Memory System?
TMS is a topical approach to Scripture memory. It centers on 60 verses grouped by theme — six topics per series, two verses per topic — so that related truths are learned together. A distinctive feature is that you memorize the reference both before and after the verse, which trains you to recall not only the words but where they are found.
The system is designed to be worked through gradually. You begin with Series A, add two verses each week, and keep reviewing everything you have already learned. That blend of new learning and constant review is what gives the system its staying power — and it is the same principle behind the spaced-repetition review in The Bible Memory App.

The five series
The five TMS series, with sample verses from each
The Topical Memory System is arranged into five series, A through E. Each series gathers six topics, and each topic pairs two verses, for twelve verses per series and sixty in all. You work through the series in order, learning two verses at a time while continuing to review the ones you already know. To give you a feel for each series, here are two of its six topics with their paired verses — the complete official list is available from The Navigators.

The topics above are a sample, not the official list — each series contains six topics and twelve verses in all. Sample references verified against The Navigators' published TMS topic list; topic wording can vary slightly between editions, so if you are following the official course, let your own materials settle any differences. Week by week
A 30-week cadence for all 60 verses
The classic TMS pace is two verses per week — one topic at a time. At that pace the whole system takes about 30 weeks, or roughly seven months. Here is what that looks like in practice. If life gets busy, slow the pace rather than skipping review; a year-long TMS journey with daily review beats a seven-month sprint you cannot sustain.
Series A — Live the New Life
Two verses each week. Learn each verse with its reference before and after, and start a short daily review of everything learned so far.
Series B — Proclaim Christ
Add the gospel verses two per week while your daily review now cycles through all of Series A. This is where the review habit starts to matter.
Series C — Rely on God's Resources
Keep the same pace. Twenty-four verses are now in review; spaced repetition keeps that from becoming a burden by spacing out the strong ones.
Series D — Be Christ's Disciple
Two new verses a week, plus review. If a verse from an earlier series feels shaky, give it an extra recall session rather than re-learning it later.
Series E — Grow in Christlikeness
Finish the final twelve verses. By week 30 you have memorized all 60 TMS verses — and reviewed each one many times over.
Review for life
The system does not end at verse 60. A few minutes of spaced review each day keeps all sixty verses ready for the rest of your life.
Each week, in about ten minutes a day
Read the new verse aloud with its reference a few times on day one. From day two on, practice recalling it from memory — then spend the rest of your ten minutes reviewing older verses. By the weekend the new pair should come out clean, reference first and last.
How to use it
A simple rhythm for working through the verses
The system is most effective when you treat review as the main event, not an afterthought. Learn a new verse with its reference, practice recalling it without looking, and then review the verses you already know every single day. A few focused minutes daily will carry you through the whole system over time.
Start
Begin with one series
You do not have to learn all sixty verses at once. Start with the first series and add verses as the earlier ones become solid.
Learn
Learn verse and reference
The Topical Memory System teaches the reference before and after the verse so you can find it again. Memorize both together.
Recall
Practice active recall
Recite or type each verse from memory rather than only rereading it. Recall is what moves a verse into long-term memory.
Review
Review every day
A short daily review of verses you already know is the heart of the system. Consistent review is what keeps all sixty verses ready.
Review is the secret
Most people who give up on Scripture memory stopped reviewing too soon. The Topical Memory System builds review into the daily routine on purpose. Keep cycling through the verses you already know, and the list of sixty stays ready instead of fading.
Practice with help
Working the system with spaced repetition in The Bible Memory App
The hardest part of TMS is not learning verse 3 — it is still knowing verse 3 when you are learning verse 43. That is a scheduling problem, and spaced repetition solves it. In The Bible Memory App you type each verse from memory (the app fades the words out as you learn), and once a verse is mastered the app automatically schedules reviews at growing intervals — soon at first, then less often as the verse gets stronger. Your daily session always shows you exactly which TMS verses are due, so review never piles up and nothing silently fades.
Add the references two at a time as you reach each topic, and include the reference in your typed recall so it is welded to the verse, just as the system intends. For the technique itself — first-letter prompts, recall practice, and review timing — see our full guide on how to memorize Scripture. And when you finish all sixty, the Memory Verses by Topic library is a natural next step for going deeper on any TMS topic, from prayer to perseverance.

Questions about the Topical Memory System
What is the Topical Memory System?
The Topical Memory System, or TMS, is a Scripture-memory program from The Navigators that organizes a core set of 60 verses by topic. It is designed to ground believers in foundational truths and build a lasting habit of memorizing and reviewing God's Word.
How many verses are in the Topical Memory System?
The classic Topical Memory System contains 60 verses arranged into five series of twelve verses each. Every series covers six topics, with two verses per topic, so you learn related truths together.
What are the five series in the Topical Memory System?
The five TMS series are: A — Live the New Life, B — Proclaim Christ, C — Rely on God's Resources, D — Be Christ's Disciple, and E — Grow in Christlikeness. You work through them in order, two verses at a time, while reviewing everything you have already learned.
How long does it take to complete the Topical Memory System?
At the classic pace of two verses per week, the 60 verses take about 30 weeks — roughly seven months. The pace matters less than the daily review habit; many people stretch the system across a year and retain the verses better for it.
How does BibleMemory.com work with the Topical Memory System?
You can add the TMS references in The Bible Memory App, memorize each verse with active recall by typing it from memory, and let spaced repetition schedule your reviews automatically. Create or join a group to memorize the same verses alongside a class, small group, or discipleship partner and track progress together.
Is BibleMemory.com affiliated with The Navigators?
No. The Topical Memory System is a trademark of The Navigators, and BibleMemory.com is an independent Scripture-memory tool that is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Navigators. We simply make it easy to memorize and review verses, including the references used in the Topical Memory System.
