Bible Verses About Sickness to Memorize

The Bible does not look away from sickness. It gives us a God who names Himself "the LORD that healeth thee," a psalmist who blesses the LORD "who healeth all thy diseases," and a Saviour who spent much of His earthly ministry touching the sick. It also gives us Paul, who asked three times for healing and received instead the words, "My grace is sufficient for thee."

Both truths belong in a sick person’s memory: God heals, and God sustains when healing waits. Psalm 41:3 pictures the LORD strengthening someone "upon the bed of languishing" — present in the hospital room, not just the recovery. James 5:14-15 directs the sick to prayer; Psalm 73:26 holds up the heart when the flesh fails.

Whether you are the patient or sitting beside one, these twelve KJV verses give you something solid to hold through diagnosis, treatment, and long nights.

12 Bible verses about sickness

Each verse below is shown in the King James Version. Read it slowly, then use the note beneath it to see why it is worth carrying with you.

  1. James 5:14-15

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

The New Testament’s direct instruction for sickness: call for prayer, and the prayer of faith shall save the sick.

  2. Psalm 103:2-3

    Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

Blessing the LORD "who healeth all thy diseases" keeps gratitude and hope alive even mid-illness.

  3. Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.

"Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed" is a prayer short enough to pray from a hospital bed.

  4. Exodus 15:26

And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

"I am the LORD that healeth thee" — healing is part of God’s own name for Himself.

  5. Psalm 41:3

The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

The LORD strengthens the sick "upon the bed of languishing" — a promise for the long, slow days of illness.

  6. Isaiah 41:10

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee" answers the fear that often weighs more than the sickness itself.

  7. Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

When flesh and heart fail, God remains the strength of the heart — the verse for when the body cannot be trusted.

  8. 2 Corinthians 12:9

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

"My grace is sufficient for thee" is God’s answer when healing is delayed, and strength made perfect in weakness is its promise.

  9. Psalm 30:2

O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

"I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me" gives you David’s own testimony to pray back to God.

  10. Matthew 11:28

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Jesus’ invitation to the weary and heavy laden includes the chronically ill, with rest as His gift.

  11. Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

"With his stripes we are healed" roots all healing — body and soul — in what Christ bore for us.

  12. 3 John 1:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

John’s prayer that his friend "be in health" shows that praying for physical healing is thoroughly biblical.

The Bible Memory App turns that practice into a daily habit: type each verse from memory, get instant feedback on every word, and review on a schedule so the verses stay with you for years, not days. It is free to start, and you can add any of the verses above in seconds.

FAQ

Questions about Bible verses on sickness

What is a good Bible verse for someone who is sick?

Jeremiah 17:14 — "Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved" — is a beloved prayer for the sick, and Psalm 41:3 promises the LORD will strengthen the sick person "upon the bed of languishing." Isaiah 41:10 addresses the fear that comes with illness.

What psalm do you read for healing?

Psalm 103 is the great healing psalm — "Bless the LORD... who healeth all thy diseases" (Psalm 103:2-3). Psalm 30 ("I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me") and Psalm 41 are also traditionally read and prayed over the sick.

Does the Bible promise God will always heal?

Scripture shows God as healer (Exodus 15:26) and records many healings, but it also records Paul praying three times for relief and receiving "My grace is sufficient for thee" instead (2 Corinthians 12:8-9). Believers pray boldly for healing while trusting God’s grace to be enough either way — and ultimate healing is promised to every believer in the resurrection.
