Bible Verses About Repentance to Memorize

Repentance has a reputation problem — it sounds like groveling. But in Scripture it is overwhelmingly good news: a turn, a homecoming, "times of refreshing... from the presence of the Lord." Jesus said heaven itself throws a party over it: "joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth." The doorway looks low, but it opens into mercy.

The Bible’s repentance verses are remarkably specific about what God wants and what He promises. He wants the heart, not theater — "rend your heart, and not your garments." He promises what no amount of self-punishment can produce: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

These ten verses are for the moment after failure, when the temptation is to hide, minimize, or despair. Memorized, they keep the road back to God permanently lit.

10 Bible verses about repentance

Each verse below is shown in the King James Version. Read it slowly, then use the note beneath it to see why it is worth carrying with you.

  1. 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The confession promise every believer should know by heart: God is "faithful and just to forgive" and to cleanse.

  2. Acts 3:19

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

Repentance leads somewhere wonderful — sins "blotted out" and "times of refreshing... from the presence of the Lord."

  3. Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

David’s prayer after his worst failure — "Create in me a clean heart, O God" — ready-made words for your own.

  4. Psalm 51:17

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

What God will never turn away: "a broken and a contrite heart" — repentance is the one offering you can always afford.

  5. Proverbs 28:13

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

The two roads after sin: covering it "shall not prosper," but confessing and forsaking finds mercy.

  6. Joel 2:12-13

Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

"Rend your heart, and not your garments" — God wants real inward turning, and He is "gracious and merciful" to those who do.

  7. Isaiah 55:7

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

The wicked who returns finds God ready: "he will abundantly pardon" — pardon with abundance, not reluctance.

  8. 2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

The classic pattern — humble, pray, seek, turn — met by God’s hearing, forgiving, and healing.

  9. Luke 15:7

I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Heaven’s perspective on your repentance: more joy "over one sinner that repenteth" than over ninety-nine who need none.

  10. 2 Corinthians 7:10

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Distinguishes godly sorrow, which "worketh repentance to salvation," from the sorrow of the world that only condemns.

FAQ

Questions about Bible verses on repentance

What is the best Bible verse about repentance?

For confession, 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." For the heart of repentance, Psalm 51:10 and 51:17 — David’s own prayer after his sin with Bathsheba.

What is the difference between guilt and repentance?

2 Corinthians 7:10 draws the line: "godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." Guilt alone circles the failure; repentance turns from it toward God — and Scripture attaches mercy, cleansing, and "times of refreshing" (Acts 3:19) only to the turning.

Will God really forgive me again after repeated failure?

Scripture’s answer is consistent: "whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy" (Proverbs 28:13), and Isaiah 55:7 promises God "will abundantly pardon." Jesus told Peter to forgive seventy times seven (Matthew 18:22) — a standard He does not hold others to while exempting Himself.
