Bible Verses About Discipleship to Memorize

A disciple is simply a follower who is becoming like the One he follows. Jesus’ first call was two words — "Follow me" — and His last command was to go and make more followers, "teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." Everything between those two sentences is discipleship.

The verses below carry the cost and the promise side by side. Discipleship means denying yourself and taking up a cross daily; it also means abiding in His word, bearing much fruit, and being known by love. And it never terminates on itself: Paul told Timothy to commit what he had learned "to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also" — four generations of disciples in a single verse.

Memorizing these passages is itself an act of discipleship — Jesus said His disciples are those who continue in His word. Hiding that word in your heart is how you continue in it everywhere you go.

12 Bible verses about discipleship

Each verse below is shown in the King James Version. Read it slowly, then use the note beneath it to see why it is worth carrying with you.

  1. Matthew 28:19-20

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The Great Commission is the marching order of every disciple, ending with the promise "I am with you alway."

  2. Luke 9:23

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Deny yourself, take up the cross daily, and follow — Jesus’ own definition of what it costs to come after Him.

  3. John 8:31-32

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Continuing in His word is what marks a true disciple, and knowing the truth that makes free is the result.

  4. Matthew 4:19

And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

"Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" — the first call shows that Jesus does the making; we do the following.

  5. John 13:34-35

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Love for one another is the badge by which "all men know" who Jesus’ disciples are.

  6. 2 Timothy 2:2

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Discipleship multiplies: what you have learned, commit to faithful people who will teach others also.

  7. Galatians 2:20

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live" is the inner reality of discipleship — His life lived in yours.

  8. John 15:8

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

Bearing much fruit glorifies the Father and proves discipleship — the goal stated in a single verse.

  9. Colossians 2:6-7

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

As you received Christ, so walk in Him — rooted, built up, established in the faith, abounding with thanksgiving.

  10. 1 Peter 2:21

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

Christ left us an example "that ye should follow his steps" — discipleship is imitation of a Person, not a program.

  11. Luke 14:27

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

Jesus’ hard saying about bearing the cross keeps discipleship honest about its cost.

  12. John 15:5

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Abiding in the vine is the secret of all fruitfulness — "without me ye can do nothing."

How to memorize these verses

Scripture memory has been a core discipleship discipline since the church began — Psalm 119:11 was the curriculum long before printed Bibles existed. If you disciple someone else, memorize these verses together and recite them to each other when you meet; 2 Timothy 2:2 works best when the "faithful men" are holding each other accountable to the same word. Start with Matthew 28:19-20 and Luke 9:23, the bookends of the call. The Bible Memory App is free to start and makes it easy for a discipleship pair or small group to work through one shared collection at the same pace.

The Bible Memory App turns that practice into a daily habit: type each verse from memory, get instant feedback on every word, and review on a schedule so the verses stay with you for years, not days. It is free to start, and you can add any of the verses above in seconds.

FAQ

Questions about Bible verses on discipleship

What is the key Bible verse for discipleship?

Matthew 28:19-20, the Great Commission — "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations" — is the foundational discipleship text. Luke 9:23 ("take up his cross daily, and follow me") defines what being a disciple costs, and John 8:31 defines what it looks like: continuing in His word.

What did Jesus say makes someone His disciple?

Jesus gave three marks: continuing in His word (John 8:31), loving one another (John 13:35), and bearing much fruit (John 15:8). He also required self-denial and cross-bearing (Luke 9:23) — discipleship is a whole-life allegiance, not a class to complete.

Why is Scripture memory important for discipleship?

Jesus said true disciples "continue in my word" (John 8:31), and memorization is the most portable way to do that — the word goes with you into conversations, temptations, and decisions. It is also how discipleship multiplies: you can only commit to others what you actually carry (2 Timothy 2:2).
