How to Meditate on God's Word
Meditating on God's Word is a powerful way to draw closer to the Lord. It is very different than the mind-clearing meditation that some religions teach. Meditating on Scripture is about filling your mind with God's Word and communing with Him.
There are many ways to meditate on Scripture, but here are some ways to start.
- Go slowly. Read through a passage very slowly, as if you were carefully chewing on it, not wanting to miss a thing. Sometimes it's richest to focus on shorter sections at a time or even a single verse.
- Say the verse aloud. A whisper is fine! But faith comes from hearing, and the Bible was written to be heard.
- Emphasize each word. Say the verse multiple times, emphasizing a different word each time. Not only will this reveal deeper meaning, but it also helps to cement it in your memory.
- Memorize it. Scripture Typer's three-step memorization process, Type It, Memorize It, and Master It, is a simple, guided way to meditate on God's Word and even memorize it in the process.
- Pray the verse. One of the best ways to meditate on God's Word is by praying it back to Him. As you slowly say the verse aloud, whisper it back to Him. Ask Him to help you apply the verse in your life.
Meditating on God's Word is powerful, but it's also fun! Try it out. And watch Scripture--and your relationship with the Author--come alive.
