The Power of Overlearning a Passage
How do you know that you know a passage? Well, here's a tip before moving on to the next verse. It's called overlearning.
Overlearning basically means to keep studying or repeating something, even once you feel like you know it. Studies show that overlearning can be an effective way to enhance retention, especially when combined with periodic review.
The more you overlearn a passage, the more you should be able to retain it. So, you think you know a verse? Keep learning it! Use every means you can--Scripture Typer's three-step memorization process is a proven place to start. But don't stop there--record the verse & listen back to it while you are walking, driving, or getting ready for your day. Say the verse while you listen to it for added umph. You can also use flash cards and draw pictures to represent the verse. (Audio, drawing, & flash card features available with the Scripture Typer PRO App for iPhone, iPad, Android, & Kindle Fire).
And when Scripture Typer's smart, automated review system reminds you to review a verse, review it! Overlearning is thought to be most effective when combined with regular review. Try to review your verses at least every three to six weeks for maximum overlearning effectiveness. You can lock the review cycle frequency for all of your verses under Settings -> Preferences. Finally, look forward to overlearning your verses as a special way to hide God's Word in your heart & grow closer to the Lord. Happy memorizing!
Tips & Tricks
What's That Sound?
Have you noticed your phone vibrating and beeping when you miss a word in a verse on the Scripture Typer App for iPhone, Android, & Kindle Fire? Those alarms are designed to help keep you from making errors. But, if you'd prefer a calmer response, you can always turn the Vibrations and Beep on Error features off. Just go to Settings -> Preferences. Choose one or the other, keep them both on, or turn them both off. It's up to you! Happy memorizing!
