Rosie: I'm not sure. I don't quite remember. XP
Hannah: Btw, did you get my letter in the mail? I had messed up on something, so just making sure it got to you okay. :)
And killing everyone else in the process… xP
xD Or killing yourself preparing for Nationals... :P
Thanks. :) Not going to Nationals allows me to avoid some life-draining socialization, anyway…
Thank you! I really enjoyed doing it! :D
Haha, we've already gotten over this...although it's sad you guys can't compete at Nationals, at least you finished strong. :)
Thanks, and you too! You did a really good job with your dramatization of Jonah 1. (And the test, of course.) I think some of us were pretty much talking about it for the rest of the day. :)
The Bible Bee says
here that the scores will be released on August 27. Hopefully we can trust them.
I would hope I don't qualify… but then you and the others wouldn't either… *sigh*
Great job, to all of the contestants! 3 days until scores are released!!! (Hopefully) :D
5 days till Locals!!! (and I've never felt more unprepared! xD jk)
Once again, congratulations, Hannah!! :D
I FINISHED ALL MY VERSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you haven't heard this already, Landon and I finished the first (out of 6, hopefully) Bible Bee video reviewing week 1 of the Sword Study! If you want to see it and the next ones as they come out, the link is www.vimeo.com/channels/biblebee
I agree; Psalm 86:1-8 is amazing! Over and over, he asks God for grace, mercy, and deliverance - David never seems to take anything for granted. Puts most (all?) of us to shame, really.
Another of my favorites is Isaiah 1:16-18, almost as blunt as you can get. Just imagine shouting out that in a major city. :P It's what we really need to do, though…
I do like how blunt the prophets are. They get straight to the point, and aren't afraid of offending people - because the Gospel is supposed to offend! :) One passage that really stood out to me was Psalm 86:1-8; it is a wonderful prayer of humble trust in the Lord, and reliance solely upon Him. And I also really like 2 Chronicles 14:11 for similar reasons, as you can see how Asa humbly relied and acknowledged God as the their only way of victory over the enemy.
Thanks - you too!
Wow, if I have to pick one, I think so far I'd say Joel 2:12-13. Joel's very blunt about things: don't worry about tearing your clothes, or other physical penance; put your heart in the right place and return mournfully to God. I've always liked Joel. :)
Have any stood out to you (or anyone else, who never seems to show up)?
Wow, you're doing great!! Keep up the great work! I know it's probably really early to be asking, but of all the passages, which ones have stood out to you most? Studying is going really well - and I am glad, because I was in no way ready for BB to start so soon =) I finished my verses early Thursday morning, and am on Week 3, same as you.
Pretty well. I have a couple more passages to memorize (the work of a day, if I felt like it…), and am doing two SS days per day, just like last year. I think I'm starting Week 3 today. What about you?
Wow. We are so inactive on here. How is everyone's studying/memorizing coming along?
Okay. Looking into them :) Thanks XD
(killer angels sounds...fun) haha no jk it sounds cool
Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. :)
Gods and Generals,
The Killer Angels, and
The Last Full Measure. I suppose you'll see my review through G+, but I might as well leave
a link here too.
Anybody recently finish any good books?
Oh, I understood; I was just being facetious…. :P
I quite enjoy having a story stuck in my head, though—you'll never stop improving and developing it! On the other hand, who doesn't wish thoughts were easier to put into words? (Anyone who has talked to me in person knows that my tongue struggles with this. My fingers are much better at it, though.) :D
You'd understand if you read the book. The subtitle of the book - A Teen Rebellion Against Low Expectations - helps it ('it' meaning a rebellion against rebellion) make a bit more sense. Make sense? :) :: I know! I basically have books written in my head, but I can never get it on paper... which is really rather frustrating... and is also why I'm not sure I am going to get very far. But I really shouldn't be saying that while reading Do Hard Things :P
Exactly—if I had studied only to do well in the competition, I would be very disappointed. (As it is, I'm not.)
Yes, I have heard of Do Hard Things. I've not read it, though. (As far as a rebellion against rebellion goes… that kinda sounds hypocritical!) I'll need to scour our shelves for it, but I don't think we own it.
Aside from poetry, which I am pretty serious about, I write like you (but maybe a bit more seriously), except I don’t write the first chapter of my story (-ies), I write one in the middle! I do like how they come out, though! It’s especially hard, though, when you calculate that the well-developed story you have in your head would fill approximately four books… Then you calculate that at a rate of one chapter per week, it would take you over two years to finish the first draft… :Þ
I see. Didn't you have 20 _seconds_ left on the local test? ;-) And how did you do that anyway? I always finish with either a little bit more, or a little bit less than 5 minutes. Oh, that would make sense - I kind of liked how pretty much the only cross references they asked were from our memory verses...I get what you mean, though. But hey, it was lots of fun, and that wasn't even the reason we learned and studyed it all, right? :: Wow, you really are a bookworm. And I see you really enjoy Lamplighter. Btw, have you heard of Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris? The book is a rebellion against rebellion. ;-) I finally got around to starting it, and having read the first 90 pages in one day, I think it will become one of my top favorite books. I would highly recommend it to any teen. :: Lol I'll put it this way: one of _the last ways_ I would describe myself is being a writer. :P Well...I wasn't really trying to write anything good in the first place, I was just sort of scribbling. Ugh - how to describe it! I guess you could say it is the first 4 pages of the first chapter to a *possible* book (according to Nicolas, I'm not really getting my hopes up). It isn't all that great, but, at least better than I thought my scribbles could be. All I'll say is that the name of the chapter is "A Narrow Escape".
The reasons I have theorized for my low written test score:
1. I did it WAY too fast. You’re just not supposed to have 20 minutes left after Q200.
2. I didn’t know several of the questions covering the memory passages (many of which I hadn’t memorized).
3. My brain was worn out.
4. The test was not what I expected it to be. Where were all those Greek words I learned?
Since Bible Bee, I've read Prisoners of the Sea (in two days—I was so book-hungry!), Ishmael, Genesis, and Job. Today I'm reading Hand on the Bridle and Exodus.
Oh, and baby holding. I always do quite a lot of that, too. :)
I certainly don't know you like you're family. Must be why you writing doesn't shock me. I've actually started doing a bit more of that myself. What are you writing?
Thank you - I have to admit, I was quite suprised at how I did. Especially looking at both my written and oral score...lol...wait. *goes and checks BB website* Oh...I thought I got a pretty bad score on the test - what happened? You usually score a lot higher than me. LOL Exactly the same here - I've started, and started back up several books that I have *really* been wanting to read. What books are you reading presently? Um...other than loads of school, laundry, piano prep. and baby-holding - I've enjoyed getting back into reading (as I said before) and very interestingly, writing (if you knew me like my family, that would shock you).
Good job to you too! Yeah, I think it's funny that you got one more question correct than I did on the written test. :)
With Bible Bee over, I'm largely taking a break from memorization and studying, but I got a rigorous Bible reading plan up and going. And, of course, I now get to devour books in general! And work on all my various linguistic hobbies, and wash dishes! What about you?
My, it has been quiet on here....and Nationals is over.... Anyway, great job to all of the National qualifiers and their final scores!! What is everyone doing now that BB is done?
EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT: Yesterday morning, at 8:38 a.m., Mercy Evangeline Alexander was born into this world!! She is our third heaviest *smiles* - 9 lbs. 1 oz. She and her mom are both doing well. Though, prayer for Mom in her recovery and healing, and prayer for Mercy as she learns to eat would be much appreciated. :) "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well." ~Psalm 139:13-14
Just popping on to say, ONE WEEK UNTIL NATIONALS!! :)
Ummm… Let's put it this way: if my crazy studying didn't involve Bible reading, the dust on my Bible would be an inch thick.
How is everyone in their Bible reading??
I'm doing fine and so is my studying! (Well, neither is as good as it should be, but anyway.)
How's the studying going for you all? :) Looking forward to seeing you all in about 1 and 1/2 months!!
@Rosie: It's nothing to be sorry for… :P
Sorry, Rosie. He sort of did imply. Tell Titus you're welcome. :D
@Mindelg: Oh, I get what I did. I think I got that out of the last part of Hannah's comment: "If you look at Caleb's last comment, he implied that he's on my side, though he definitely doesn't feel as strongly about it." I got confused. Very sorry about that. :P @Hannah: Titus thanks you :)
Rosie, I never said I thought you didn't like his titles, either (though I implied it)! I only encouraged him, just in case. Those are good titles, Titus!
Sure, like I'm the one jumping to conclusions. Very funny, Rosie. Notice what I said: "No smirking. *frown*" And from that you conclude that I think you dislike his titles? You ought to know better than that. I couldn't really tell whether your implication was meant to be taken as such, or just something you somehow thought to be sneaky, as both seemed equally unlikely…
@Hannah and Mindelg: Okay, now hold on! I never said I didn't like his titles! You both are jumping to conclusions! I said:
I implied that I didn't like his titles. *smirk*
Notice the word
implied -- I never said I didn't like his titles, I said that to make him think that (which explains why I smirked) because he was standing right there. And apparently, I succeeded in doing the same to you. ;-) Sneaky, huh? (okay, no not really) But anyway, I think his titles are just fine. @Hannah: His titles are: Chapter 1 --
Christ Gives us Spiritual Blessings, Chapter 2 --
By Grace we are Saved, Chapter 3 --
The Mystery of the Gospel is Revealed, Chapter 4 --
Unity in Christ, Chapter 5 --
Walking in Love, Light & Wisdom, and Chapter 6 --
Putting on the Armor of God. See, these are really good in my perspective! (this comment turned out *way* longer than I intended it to...)
What were his titles? I'm interested. What about key verses? You shouldn't be smirking! You wouldn't be too happy either, I'm sure! By the way, please show Titus this comment. It might encourage him, after the way you smirked at him and all that. *frown* NOTE TO TITUS: This note, though I don't exactly know what to say, is meant to encourage you after the way Rosie smirked at you and all that stuff. I'm sure your titles are great, I would like to know them. I just might use them myself... I'm glad you were standing by Rosie, so that she would say you weren't pleased and so I could encourage you. Hope you win (second)! :D If you look at Caleb's last comment, he implied that he's on my side, though he definitely doesn't feel as strongly about it. Oh, my, its almost 10:00! I need to go now.
No smirking. *frown*
Well, I picked Our Glorious Inheritance for chapter 1, Salvation and Inclusion for 2, God's Gospel Wisdom for 3, Newness in Christ for 4, Walk as Children of Light for 5, and Obey and be Strong for 6.
My key verses were 18, 16, 9, 24, 8, 10, respectively.
I had Titus do that on Friday, but, well, I think I'll have to make my own....Titus is standing right here and isn't pleased that I implied that I didn't like his titles. *smirk* What about you?
@Rosie and Nicolas: Did either of you pick titles and key verses for the Ephesians chapters as a part of your "Aerial View" study?
Lol I can just imagine you and Elisabeth doing that. :D And I'm sure you won't talk to me at all. ;-) I'm planning on bringing my Bible Bee study notebooks, so....
I'll just talk to Mercy, and maybe Titus and Royal. Especially Titus, about Bible Bee. No, I'm just kidding. Completely just kidding. I'm soo excited about today! Yesterday, Elisabeth and I kept saying to each other, "Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow!" And today we keep saying, "Today, today, today, today, today, today!" I'm really excited.
Sorry, but I do think it's quite silly. I know....being serious is no fun. :) You don't want to talk to me anymore? Well, I'm sorry, but I don't think you can get away from that...unless you plan on being quiet all evening....*ahem* ;-)
Oh, dearest Rosie, you believe this is silly? {starts pouting} you're too serious! Please? You're not any fun! I don't feel like talking to you any more. {runs off crying} JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING!
For shame, your Sarcasticness, 'tis but a trifling formality, which, I assent, is rather extraneous, yet one cannot in due honesty dub it silly - which is itself a most absurd term, begging your pardon.
Hey, you're not dragging me into that -- you can be silly if you want to. I am never silly (as if!). ;-)
@Nicolas: Don't be too sad. Remember how I used to spell your name wrong? @ rosie: I know you were. So was I, my dear Rosie. ;D We can start doing the same thing the boys are doing.
@Mindelg--Well, my dear Caleb, studying is going fine. ;) I've gotten quite far in my Ephesians study--though, I'm a bit behind on my verses. I'm hoping to catch up on them by the end of this week, but we shall see...
@Hannah--*jaw drop* I had a TYPO?? Augh!! This utterly ruins my reputation!!!
Hannah, you didn't offend me in any way; I was just playing around :) I'm sure Great Treasures is a great website!
@ Mindelg: Yes, you're right. It does not strike me with awe in any way, though it is pretty neat. @ Gods Maiden of Virtue: I do understand what you mean, only using the words awesome for God and his attributes and things like that. I do sincerely hope that I did not offend you in any way. I really just meant it's really cool. @ Nicolas: Wow! You actually COMMENTED on here! and Wow! I actually spelled your name RIGHT! and Nicolas, um, well, there's a typo in your comment. You said: "*facepalm* I still don't understand why are so vehemently against the word "awesome"...." I think you meant: "*facepalm* I still don't understand why you are so vehemently against the word "awesome".... " You forgot the word "you".
@Nicolas: Wow! I actually succeeded in getting you to respond! Anyway, I am not
vehemently against the word awesome; I just like to reserve it for when I am talking about God, His attributes, etc. Now, I'm sure the next thing you were planning on saying was that I don't need to impose it on others, which is true, and I agree with that. And that is why I said
"....sorry, I just had to say that ;-)
I was just playing around.
Well, my dear Nicolas, of a truth, I do find myself in doubt that Great Treasures strikes Hannah with awe. (Begging your pardon for not using all caps.)
How's your studying going?
*facepalm* I still don't understand why are so vehemently against the word "awesome"....
I'm not sure what Greek words I will be doing for chapter 2 yet. I'll let you know when I do. I object to the last part of your comment....sorry, I just had to say that ;-)
oh I see GMOV. what greek words r u doing for chapther 2? You should get on great treasures. it is great. no, its AWESOME!
@Mindelg: Yes, that is pretty annoying. Titus and I chose those two for Greek words for chapter 1 as well. @Hannah: No, I do not use greattreasures.org; and yes, all the Juniors have the same test, same thing with the Seniors and Primaries. True, I could study Ephesians with ESV, but as I use NKJV for Bible Bee, that would throw me off. By "dealing with" using the ESV Reformation Study Bible, I just meant that since I don't use ESV, it would be slightly bothersome -- especially since everything else I read and study from is in NKJV.
I also chose purpose for chapter 1. I don't know what to do with 2, yet. Rosie, do you use greattreasures.org, the website Bible Bee recommended? GMOV: I'm guessing they do the same Junior written test for all versions, right? You could study Ephesians with ESV and not have to deal with it. ~Hannah P.S. What is there to deal with ESV, anyway?
@Rosie: What's really annoying is that Strong's Concordance uses neither ESV nor NKJV.
For Greek words I just picked ones that were common to the chapter, glory and inheritance. For chapter two, I think I'll do grace and peace, maybe also flesh.
What were your greek words, rosie? I chose blessed and inheritance (this is for chapter 1) and glory
There's nothing wrong with it being ESV, I just said that because I'm using NKJV.
Well, sort of...at the beginning, I just chose my keywords for Ephesians as a whole and then looked up the Greek words; but yesterday, we began studying each verse individually (starting with verses 1-6 of chapter 1), and when doing that, we found a part on Bible Hub where you can look up a verse, and it will show you the Greek word to go along with particular words in it. So that was especially helpful (to me at least). What about you?
Deal with it? I think I'll overlook that…
Thanks for the link! I'm not sure I'll use it, but it sure looks helpful! So have you picked Greek words for chapter 1?
Yes, I have been busy.... Well, we only have the ESV Reformation Study Bible, so I kind of just have to deal with it. :P Since I/we (Titus and I) just started using it today, we have only gotten to the notes and outline at the beginning of Ephesians. Bible Hub is a website where you can search/study/look up a lot of information, etc. on any part of the Bible (that is probably a really lame definition of it though). Here's the website if you want to check it out: http://www.biblehub.com/
Yeah, pretty busy. You too, I think… I usually have from about 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock to study, and some time between supper and bedtime. (So probably anywhere from 2 and a half to 3 and a half hours.) About the Reformation Study Bible - do you use the NKJV or ESV one? And what is Bible Hub?
Wow -- you must have been busy! How much time do you have each day to study? I only get to study in the morning (about 2 hours), and *sometimes* a little in the evening, so....not nearly as much as I'd like. Titus and I are studying one chapter every week, and maybe one day into the next week depending on how long it takes. Right now, we are using Bible Hub to study every verse individually, and look up Greek words (it has Strong's Concordance on it); and then we are using Bible Gateway to look up cross references and things related to Ephesus, etc. Oh, and about the Reformation Study Bible - Mom suggested that to us this morning, and it really is helpful!
I'm sort of trying to follow my own "Sword Study" layout. For instance, one day I "overviewed" the whole book, somewhat equivalent to the first week of a Sword Study. Then I wrote chapter 1 verse summaries, and did a study on the work of the Trinity as shown in that chapter. After doing two Greek word studies with cross-references, I'm pretty much done with chapter 1.
As far as resources go, I'm using my Reformation Study Bible
a lot,
GreatTreasures.org, the last two Sword Studies, and some other things, especially for finding cross-references. Oh, and how could I not mention Strong's Concordance?
@Hannah: That's great that you already know a bunch of your verses! And um, no, I haven't checked those websites yet :-/ I've been quite busy lately, as I'm sure you can relate. :) But I promise I'll check it out *sometime.* @Mindelg: I am memorizing at least 10 verses a day, and have memorized about the same amount as you. I am working on the Mark 1:1-11 and Acts 4:24-31 passages. Well, we (Titus and I) have a reading plan for what we read from Ephesians each week. And then for studying, we are studying it as if we had a Sword Study, in that we are going through the SS for 1 John, but doing the things in relation to Ephesians. And I personally, am reading from both Gill's and Calvin's commentaries on Ephesians. And we're doing a bunch of other various things, but I can't explain them right now, as I was just called to help make dinner. What about you?
@Rosie: Good. :)
I'm trying to memorize 10 verses a day. I think I know about 70-80 already. What about you?
And how are you (and Titus) studying Ephesians? I mean, are you trying to study it as if you had a Sword Study, or by reading commentaries all day, or something else?
SOOO funny about Titus! Yeah, they'd suspect something. That'd be funny too, because there's nothing to find out! :D Yes, please help Titus lots and lots, I'll just have to work a little harder. I also want him to win second! ;) I'm not too far along with my verses, though I am seeing how many times I can type Ephesians. :D I did find out, though, that I already knew about a quarter of my verses, which is really nice. Did you check out that cross-reference website, or those three websites that tell you about Ephesus?
Oh, we will -- or well, I will, since I'll be the only one who would be home to help him. We've already decided that he study with me in the morning; works pretty well, since we both get along....:) Btw, how many verses are you memorizing a day? And how far along are you?
That's hilarious. Make sure you and your brothers help him a lot! :D (Because I really do want him to win second!)
And you're probably right - they'd want to check into things… I wonder what they'd find out…?
@Mindelg: True....though, Titus wasn't too thrilled. When he found out, he put his head down and said, "This is devastating." :) Yes, that would be very cool, but, I think people would begin to suspect something....@Hannah: Yeah, right ;-)
Mindelg: AND the two Primaries and five Seniors! That'd be great! and then, Titus would win 2nd, I would win first. And then, Martin and Nicolas and Christian would tie! And then, you, Caleb, would win first for Juniors, Rosie would win second, and... lets see... maybe Hannah-Abigail Toth would win 3rd?
I guess… But we both made it to Nationals, along with three of your siblings, one of mine, and Martin, so that doesn't really matter. Wouldn't it be cool if all 8 Juniors who qualified from RRLC made it to the semi-finals?
@Mindelg: Well, I did understand the questions better, but still....and yes, I did have more than 20 seconds left when I finished the test, but hey, you finished in time-- and did way better than me ;-)
@Rosie: I kinda liked the vagueness - it made the questions more interesting. But on the other hand, I thought so long about some of them that I finished the test with only about 20 seconds left. (And had no time to check my answers. You finished earlier than that, right?) But I agree, it's annoying when you spend a lot of time memorizing something only to find out you didn't need to… :/
http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/anatolia/ss/40512-Ephesus-Through-Ancient-History.htm
GMOV: http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/artarchaeologyarchitect/qt/Ephesus.htm and http://ancienthistory.about.com/cs/artarchaeology/a/histephesus.htm tell you all about ancient Ephesus
@Hannah: Right.....not. ;-) @Mindelg: Okay. Yeah, I mostly focused on the verses in 1 John as well, but I was kind of annoyed at how vague a lot of the questions were -- I had put so much effort into making sure I knew each individual verse in 1 John perfectly, and then they only went by chapters, and didn't focus a lot on the things you'd expect them to. Which is why I wasn't nearly as prepared as I thought.
@Rosie: I mainly studied the cross references by writing down all the questions in the Sword Study. (With their answers, of course.) Other than that, I really didn't study them that much. I really focused on the verses in 1 John.
Ok, thank you. And, you might leave off that last sentence if you lived with me awhile. :P You simply MUST check out that website! :)
Hannah - Yes, when I say test I mean the written. Nationals will be just like locals in that there will be a written test and oral round. I was told that in the semi-finals, they will have them quote verses (as they have every year) as well as quiz questions regarding Ephesians, etc. Now, making it to the top 15 at Nationals is *_a lot_* harder than making it to the top 5 at locals (way harder), and a lot harder than qualifying for Nationals. Because you have *way* more passages to choose from in the orals, and a much harder test. And, Hannah, you are _not_ dumb, nor was your question. :)
@Mindelg: Not really, I just figured there would be at least a few. There are really only two? Huh.
That's great! I finished memorizing 1 John just three days before Locals - it was my first whole book to memorize, so I was quite pleased. :) Well, I memorized most of the cross references for the Greek words, and just became very familiar with the other cross references throughout the whole Sword Study. What about you?
rosie: when you says test, do you mean written? And what do ya mean by quiz questions? I have no clue about nationals at all, sorry. do you mean they only have the written test, which would be quiz questions, for the semi-finals and finals? I know i sound really dumb, that's because I am, sorry.
Do you mean that you think there will be lots of passages from Ephesians in the Junior verses? There's only two.
Yes, I did memorize 1 John, just in time for Locals. But I'm only trying to retain chapters 1 and 4. How many of the cross-references did you memorize?
@Mindelg: That's kind of how I'm feeling -- with 600 verses already (and cross references that I will probably memorize too), memorizing Ephesians is really not an option for me. I'm only really planning on polishing the verses I do have memorized from it, and I'm sure there will be a bunch in that large 600 verse stack sitting downstairs, so...btw, did you end up memorizing all of 1 John? @Hannah: I think the cross references will only be on the test -- and the only time they would have quiz questions is in the semi-finals and possibly the finals. Other than that, you only need to learn them for the test. Oh, and I'll have to check out that website sometime; thanks for sharing!
