Merry belated Christmas
merry Christmas to everyone
I'm studying Latin and that word has thrown me off so many times. With it's stark contrast it can really messes up sentences.
for some reason Bella can mean either war or beautiful.
I'm back... life was busy so i took a break...

beautiful country = 美国 (Meǐguó) = USA 😂

Japan is called Rìběn which literally translates as “sun origin” because you know, Japan is on the east and is known as the Rising Sun

bald mouse 😂 Yeah that’s why I like pinyin. Did you know if he was able to clarify after? 😂
Roger
Friday, Aug 27, 2021 at 9:35 PM
Oh! 😅 Eww, I hate bats 😬 Also, Henry, that's quite amazing about the intonation of the Chinese language! I would hate to end up messing up like that! 😯 I've heard about those kind of instances where a language is so complex that a foreigner trying to speak it ends up saying the wrong thing bc they didn't say it just right...one story I heard was that a missionary (I think they were in Africa) was preaching to the natives, and he found out at the end of his sermon that he had been preaching against cow manure instead of sin! 😂
Renée
Friday, Aug 27, 2021 at 9:17 PM

In Chinese you could end up saying something very inappropriate if you ask someone for a pen and say the wrong tone 😅
Henry
Friday, Aug 27, 2021 at 2:28 PM
Interesting way to put it Roger 🤣 Thats what it sounds like if we try to pronounce them with our English understanding, but with the 5 tones that English don’t have, as shown in pinyin, they sound quite different
Renée

I don't know, Henry 😅 And jítā-- ohh! 😂
Roger
Friday, Aug 27, 2021 at 1:20 PM
😆 Speaking of Chinese, my dad was recently saying that it seems that the different towns/cities in China are named by dumping a drawer full of silverware on the floor, and then whatever sound it makes is what they name the place 🤣🤣

Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 at 2:13 PM
Ok, so I have to preface this by saying I know that the English equivalent is not funny (bc it's not good to do), but I think the literal translation is very interesting considering the actual meaning. Casser du sucre sur le dos de quelqu’un = breaking sugar on someone's back = talking badly behind another person’s back.
Henry
Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 at 1:57 PM
what 😂
Renée
Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 at 12:36 PM
Henry, I found an article on interesting French idioms. Some of them weren't so great, but I thought this one was interesting 😂 What does "breaking sugar on someone’s back" mean?
Renée
Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 at 12:29 PM
I agree!
Roger
Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 at 12:28 PM
Yeah, French sounds a lot better than Hungarian. 😊 Hungarian has a monotonous, robotic sound to it. Plus, Hungarian is WAY more difficult to learn than French 😅

Renée

And, Elgwana, you need to be able to roll your R's in mid-word 😂 That's actually the opposite of French. Cause in French, you say your R's with the back of your tongue (which used to be really difficult for me, but now it's not 😅). But I think on whole, I like French better than Hungarian
Renée
Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 at 9:29 AM
*goes off into a tangent* you know, you always called someone older than you básci or néni (aunt). One of the MOST common names for women was Erzsébet (Elizabeth) or Erzsé for short. You practically couldn't move without meeting another Erzsé néni (a bit of an exaggeration, but we knew quite a number of Erzsébets.) Two the most common men's names were Gábor (Gabriel) and András (Andrew).
Renée
Thursday, Aug 26, 2021 at 9:29 AM
Elgwana, there are online Hungarian teachers. Or you could listen a thousand times to the CD we ALWAYS listened to (that got really old) 😌 Or I could (can't really do this) get you in contact with our Hungarian teacher András bácsi (uncle Andrew) 😜

Renée
Wednesday, Aug 25, 2021 at 10:53 PM
I think you meant HE makes it hot, right? 😅 but no, there's no "it", literally
Henry
Wednesday, Aug 25, 2021 at 10:52 PM
Something interesting about pronouns in Chinese is that “he” and “she” are both pronounced as “tā” but written it is 他 and 她, respectively 😅
Henry
Wednesday, Aug 25, 2021 at 10:49 PM
Does God makes it hot? 😅
Renée
Wednesday, Aug 25, 2021 at 10:25 PM
Hmm, if have to think about that... well, one that's not too interesting that I can think of off the top of my head is that, "Il fait chaud," literally means, "He makes hot." It's supposed to mean, "It is hot." But I guess all languages have something like that 😅 I'll have to think about this more
Henry
Wednesday, Aug 25, 2021 at 10:15 PM
