“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the Lord honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words” (Isaiah 58:13). As we have the Sabbath approaching, let us get into a spirit of reverence. The Sabbath is the Lord’s day (Rev. 1:10, Mark 2:27), to give Him glory and honor. It is a day to show that we recognize Him as the Creator of the universe and the Most High God of our hearts. He gave us six days and He asks that we set aside just one day for Him. Our thoughts and actions are to be devoted to Him on His holy day. And in return, we are blessed because Almighty God comes down to dwell with us, lowly sinners. We have the pleasure of being in His presence on His holy Sabbath.
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Keep justice, and do righteousness, For My salvation is about to come, And My righteousness to be revealed’” (Isaiah 56:1). “Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, ‘Let God be magnified!’” (Psalm 70:4). We are called to do what is right and be just, even if everyone else around us is doing the opposite. God will take care of things in His own time, whether in this life or the next. And because God has given us His salvation, we are to continuously praise Him through everything!
“Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,” (Isaiah 46:9). We serve the only God. Anything or anyone else besides Him that receives worship is a false god. And like Isaiah 45:18 also states that there is no other like Him because He is the Creator of heaven and earth. And as verse 22 says because there is no other God that we, the whole world need to look to Him to be saved!
“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins” (Isaiah 43:25). We do not deserve forgiveness but death. But God loves us so much that for His own sake, because He didn’t want to be without us, He saved us. The love that God has for us is unfathomable. How can we not give Him the glory and praise due to Him?
“Sing to the Lord a new song, And His praise from the ends of the earth, You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, You coastlands and you inhabitants of them!” (Isaiah 42:10). “Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You” (Psalm 67:3). Psalm 67:5 is the same as verse three. These were both in my reading today and seemed perfectly fit for praising God on His Sabbath.
“For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth. The living, the living man, he shall praise You, As I do this day; The father shall make known Your truth to the children” (Isaiah 38:18-19 NKJV). Many other versions translate Sheol as the grave. This is another verse that makes it clear that those who have died in Christ aren’t in heaven praising God but are in the grave. They are waiting for the resurrection where they will be raised and given immortal bodies (1 Cor. 15:51-52). We will all go to heaven together and as the living will praise the Lord (1 Thess. 4:16-17). Soul is in the Bible around five hundred times (depending on version or source) and the word spirit is found about the same. I found in my study that it is too exhaustive for this space. So I will just have to give little nuggets here and there about the topic. As another verse I recently added in Isaiah says, “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little” (Isaiah 28:10).
“Because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:16). The writers of the New Testament quoted the Old Testament frequently. It was their only Scripture at the time and they showed that it didn’t become obsolete. Four different times in Leviticus that quote was used (Leviticus 11:44, 11:45, 19:2 & 20:26). I put them all in the Collections category for easy accessibility. We worship a holy God and He wants us to be holy. But how can we who are sinners be holy when nothing good is in us? With men it is impossible but not with God (Luke 18:27, Mark 10:27). Though we are unworthy He clothes us with His righteousness and transforms us into His image which is holy. God calls us to the highest standard and through faith in His atoning sacrifice we can live up to that standard through Him who lives inside of us (Galatians 2:20, Ephesians 2:8-10, 4:13, 1 Peter 2:24).
I finished memorizing the book of Philippians. I was figuring out what book to do next and I decided on 1st Thessalonians since I already had chapters four and five memorized. I also started Mark chapter four today. But today, I decided on Isaiah 8:20 since I am reading through Isaiah and added the verse before it. “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them”. We have to know the Word to know the truth and be able to recognize deception. I remember hearing about the story of the missionary John Nevin Andrews as a kid. It was said that he had memorized the entire Bible. He humbly replied that he hadn’t but if the New Testament was lost that he could reproduce it. And Jesus from a child knew the Scriptures. How much time I have wasted in life on useless things when that time could’ve been used for something eternally useful. I was always an avid Bible student, even as a child. I might go into more detail later when I have more time. But what a blessing this has been to memorize God’s Word.
“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; He also is become my salvation” (Isaiah 12:2, KJV). Psalm 118:14 and Exodus 15:2 are similar in that they also say “the Lord is my strength and song and is become my salvation”.
The dead are asleep, for Psalm 13:3 calls it “the sleep of death” and Daniel 12:2 says “those who sleep in the dust”. Even Jesus Himself referred to Lazarus’ death as a sleep (John 11:11-14). And then Martha said to Him in verse 24, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day”. They are awaiting the resurrection at Jesus’ coming. This is the first resurrection (Dan. 12:2, Jn. 5:29, Acts 24:15, 1 Cor. 15:51-52, Phil. 3:11, 2 Tim 2:18, Rev. 20:5-6). The dead know nothing (Ecclesiastes 9:5), and don’t return to their houses (Job 7:10) to haunt or speak to anyone. So what are they talking to if not the spirits of the dead? They are fallen angels, demons, evil spirits (called by many names) and Satan himself. For Satan has power to produce signs and lying wonders, work miracles, and transform himself into an angel of light (2 Thes. 2:9, 2 Cor. 11:14, Rev. 16:14). Don’t be deceived by Satan and his demons (1 Tim 4:1, Rev. 18:23).
“And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?” (Isaiah 8:19). We are not to consult mediums, fortune tellers, those with familiar spirits, necromancers, wizards, witches or the like as different translations call them. If God forbids it in His Word then be sure that what you are consulting are not loved ones in heaven who have died. If they were in heaven they wouldn’t disobey God’s command and converse with you. Psalm 115:17 says that “The dead do not praise the Lord”. If they were in heaven wouldn’t they be praising God as Psalms 69:34 and 148:1 says? Even Paul said in Acts 2:34, “For David did not ascend into the heavens”. So where are the dead? In verse 29 he says David, man after God”s own heart, “is both dead and buried”.
“Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death”(Revelation 20:14 NKJV). The KJV reads, “death and hell”. The first death is the death that people die in this life. The second death is that of the wicked after the “Great White Throne” judgment. The second death is mentioned by name four times in Revelation. Then it goes on to say that, “there will be no more death” (Rev. 21:4). And Isaiah 25:8 says, “He will swallow up death forever”. So it is clear that death will be no more. Hell will be no more. The second death is not one any of us want to be a part of. Let us follow the Lamb that we will be found in His Book of Life in which the second death has no power over.
I have another verse that goes with yesterday’s. “‘Come now, and let us reason together,’ Says the Lord, ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.” The worst sinner can come to God and be forgiven. But no longer are we to continue in sin. The beauty of it all is not only are we justified but then sanctification works in us as long as we allow it to. We are changed into His image where we no longer even have the desire to sin. Like the verses I added from Romans recently, we haven’t yet attained perfection but we press on toward heaven.
The verses of Psalm 51:7, 10-12, I already had in Scripture Songs in the KJV, because that is the version the songs used. I also only had them memorized in that version and still prefer it (although verse seven seems to be the same in both). But so all my verses under the individual books are in one version and because it was in my daily reading today, I am adding it in the NKJV. “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow… Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.” When God washes us we are clean. How great it is that He gives us a new heart and spirit so that we can be like Him.
Two verses from Song of Solomon, 2:4 and 6:3, were adapted for the song “His banner over me is love”. I added them along with the adapted song version that you can find in the Scripture Songs. The entire original verses are as follows. “He brought me to the banqueting house, And his banner over me was love.” “I am my beloved’s, And my beloved is mine. He feeds his flock among the lilies.”
“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14. We are not perfect but God is working in us to be conformed to His image so that we may be ready and rejoice at His glorious appearing.
I am beginning to memorize chapter three in Mark today. Also I started reading the book of Ecclesiastes today and chose these two verses to add. “‘Vanity of vanities,’ says the Preacher; ‘Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.’” Ecclesiastes 1:2 “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 It goes to show that nothing in this world is worth it. We need to look at eternity. God Almighty is the One who works in our hearts to make us beautiful so we can spend eternity with Him.
Happy Sabbath!! The verses for today are both about the Sabbath, from Mark 2:27 and 28, “And He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath . Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.’” So the Lord’s day is the Sabbath and was made for all mankind. I have many more verses about the Sabbath in its own collection.
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.” Job 38:4. God in His wisdom summed it all up for us. Who are we? We are just finite beings, but created by His hand. Not one of us were there when the heavens and earth was made. We, the creatures, thinking we can ever grasp the mysteries of the Creator. The Son of God laid down His own life for us. Who can fathom that love? How can we do anything but worship His holiness?!
My pleasure. I’m trying to add more to them as I go along. If there is anything in particular that you would like added, just let me know.
Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for making all these sets
Today, I am adding 2 Corinthians 4:1. It says, “Therefore since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart.” God has given all of us ways that we can minister and witness to others. And through what He has done for us and every blessing He has bestowed on us, there is no reason to give up in our labors for Him. He is the reason for our blessed hope.
From my reading from the book of Job today, I added Job 33:4 which says, “The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of God gives me life.” Another of many verses that shows we have life because of the breath of God. He sustains us and without Him we are just dust. For that alone He deserves all our glory and praise. Let us not ever forget every breath we take comes from God our Creator.
Today’s verse is from Psalm 42:11, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him. The help of my countenance and my God.” I will most likely add verse five as well, for it is almost the same. The well known Scripture song, “As the deer”, is from verse one that is already in the verses. I also added not too long ago verse eight which says, “The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me— And my prayer unto the God of my life.”
Today I added Job 27:3 in both the KJV and the NKJV because many times throughout the Bible breath and spirit are interchanged for the Hebrew word “ruach”. In the NKJV it reads, “As long as my breath is in me, And the breath of God in my nostrils.” The KJV says, “All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils.” It is turning into a very long study about the breath of life and the spirit as used throughout the Bible. I’m thinking it may be way too long for a post on here. So maybe I will see how I can split it up into smaller parts when I am finished with it. Sometimes what starts out as a small study will keep growing with no end in sight.
Welcome Charlotte!! So happy to have you here! 😊
I added Job 19:25, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth.” That right there shows that our hope in Christ is not in vain because He lives and we will see him coming in the clouds and ultimately stand at last on the earth!! I also added 1st Corinthians 16:13-14, which says: “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.” We can keep the faith and do everything in love because again, our Redeemer lives!
I am also reading the Bible using One Year Bible. Last year I read it through chronologically, but now I’m using the daily reading plan. It takes passages from both the Old & New Testaments along with Psalms and Proverbs everyday. I am in the books of Job and 1st Corinthians. I usually add verses from what I read. Today I added Job 12:9-10 which says: “Who among all these does not know That the hand of the Lord has done this, In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?” And then I added 1 Corinthians 15:44 which says, “It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.” I usually only add a few verses that I can memorize that day because it adds a lot on top of what I normally memorize. But I thought it was interesting that both those verses dealt with something similar. The breath of life which comes from God and the spiritual body. I will cover more about it later. I already have many verses under State of the Dead and Soul Mortality, which I may combine at some point, that you can look at and study.
I am finishing up my last chapter in Philippians and starting on chapter 2 in Mark and chapter 7 in Romans.
Welcome. Come memorize with me. I am currently memorizing the book of Mark. I memorized the book of John at three verses a day, starting about a year ago when I got a pro membership. I am also memorizing the books of Philippians and Romans at a verse a day each. I’m adding topical and bible memory verses everyday as well. Come memorize with me, whether it be a whole book, chapter, or even just a verse at a time.
