Intro to Bible Memory

Small Group Leaders Guide

Hold one hour meetings, once a week, for four weeks.

Group members will use The Bible Memory App (free) to review verses throughout the week.

You can also get group discounts on Bible Memory PRO.

Goal: Memorize Psalm 1 together, with everyone using your church’s preferred Bible translation.

Preparation

  • Download and Print this sign up form to recruit members for your group.
  • Create a group in The Bible Memory App so you can easily share the verses for Psalm 1
    • Open the Bible Memory App.
    • Go to Groups on the home screen.
    • Select the Plus icon, then “New Group”.
    • Enter a group name, description and upload a picture for your group, if desired.
  • Use the “Invite Others” link on your group page in the Bible Memory App to invite friends and social media followers to join your group.

Meeting 1

  • Introduce yourself and take a few minutes to tell everyone your story of what got you interested in memorizing Scripture.
  • Have someone volunteer to read Psalm 1 (in the Bible translation you’ll be using)
  • Ask everyone how this passage could relate to Bible memory.
  • Identify a wall or location in the area where you are meeting that has at least 6 distinct objects. Things like a light switch, door knob, window, etc.
  • Have the group pick out 6 objects. Everyone will use the same objects, and you’ll associate one object with each verse from Psalm 1.
  • Find an association between each object and the first word or few words in the verse. Start by associating the object on the far left with Psalm 1:1. Then move one object to the right and associate it with Psalm 1:2. Loose associations are fine. This can be tough, but get everyone involved and choose everyone’s favorite if multiple ideas are shared.
  • Homework: memorize verses 1 & 2

Meeting 2

  • Brief Teaching (optional)
  • Review verses 1 & 2 together.
  • Go around the room and alternate between verses 1 & 2, practicing saying the verse, using the associated object to trigger the opening word or phrase of the verse. Let each individual try to recall the intro word(s) for the verse, and let everyone else join them in saying the entire verse.
  • Homework: memorize verses 3 & 4

Meeting 3

  • Brief Teaching (optional)
  • Go around the room and alternate between verses 1 through 4, practicing saying the verse, using the associated object to trigger the opening word or phrase of the verse. Let each individual try to recall the intro word(s) for the verse, and let everyone else join them in saying the entire verse.
  • Homework: memorize verses 5 & 6

Meeting 4

  • Brief Teaching (optional)
  • Go around the room and alternate between verses 1 through 6, practicing saying the verse, using the associated object to trigger the opening word or phrase of the verse. Let each individual try to recall the intro word(s) for the verse, and let everyone else join them in saying the entire verse.
  • Next Steps: Encourage everyone to use this method to memorize other extended passages.
