Is anyone current in this group? I haven't been on in a while.
working on reviewing old verses rather than starting anything new for now
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 everyone! Kinda got off-track with memorizing for a while but hopefully can be more consistent now.
Hey Guys I haven't posted in a while:)
So I am back to try again. Don’t know how often I will post, but will be here whenever I find something interesting to share. I just did some calculating and found that if a person memorizes 3 new verses a day, they will have memorized the entire book of John in about 10 months. I am not sure that I can add 3 new verses a day, but since I am familiar with so much of John, I bet that I can average that much...
it’s going good! some kids from my church and I practice it every Sunday!
So how is everyone doing? Susan, did you get to work on 10 and 11>. Ketterpeller, how is 15 going? I am still stuck on 5, but still trying.
I kinda got off track for a little while and am trying to get back into it. Trying to get a little more fluent in 10 and 11.
I’m curious what everyone is working on. I seem to be stuck on chapter 5. How about you?
Hi everyone, Welcome to all our new members.
I meant to say Great Job! Not sure if it came out that way...
Wow Wit! 8 chapters is a lot, and it takes a lot to keep them up. If you have any insights into what you are learning, we would love to hear it!
hey everyone, I’ve been trying to memorize John for awhile. I got to chapter eight before I fell off the wagon. I’m attempting to relearn 7-8 again.
7Puppies, you are probably right about cleaning stuff out... one of these days I will get around to it.
Hey Everyone, I wanted to share a program that I am a part of. It is Tyndale’s rewards club. Tyndale is a Christian publisher and you can earn points in the club by taking surveys and things like that. I have gotten several free books in the past through the program. Right now I am trying to save up enough points to get a commentary on the book of John. If you are interested in joining, check out this link: https://www.myreaderrewardsclub.com/login?pc=3ebu-jhkv-kxh3-66yg It will give you 25 points to start and that is enough to get some of the free stuff...
chapter 17, what about you? I've been working on it for a long time and I finally have it memorized!
Hi KeterPeller, what part of John are you working on now?
Also, LittleHouse, this group seems to be getting rather... spam-chatty. Maybe you could clean out ad comments, comments exclusively for greetings and farewells, and other nonessentials/nonsense? Including this post, of course. :)
Or maybe that makes no sense.
Susan, what if 'the door' refers to the opening, rather than or in addition to the blocking part of the door?
Susan, I have jumped around some in John, but have not yet done 10. I will try to look at it in the next couple of days.
I like to join groups that are studying the same thing that I am. Maybe when I get around to studying Genesis again I will join your group David.
please join bible101, anyone who joins gets placed on the admin role so that you can all add your own verses!
just in case you don't know who this is this is David the boy with the Qualla profile picture anyway it would have to be two years since I last spoke to you?
hello little house please join my group called is Genesis history? Or join intercessory prayer
Been working on chapter 10. Love all the imagery in this chapter! Jesus describes Himself as both the Door and the Shepherd (in contrast to others whom He describes as thieves and robbers, as well as hired hands who care nothing for the sheep). Then there are the sheep (us) and the gatekeeper (who is He? God? The Holy Spirit? Or is it Jesus Himself again? Because even though the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all One, they also have different roles. So I’ve been trying to match the role of a gatekeeper to one of the Three. And then, I get how Jesus can be both the Shepherd and the Door, because I believe that in Bible times, the shepherds would block the openings in the sheepfolds with their bodies. But how can Jesus be both the Door and also go in through the door? I guess I could just go with, “they are different metaphors” and leave it at that, but I feel like there is more of a connection that I am just not getting. Any ideas, anyone?
I am so sorry I have to leave 🙁
The words flash on stage 1 for me, too. I think it is a glitch in the programming.
In verse 12 the Jews totally ignore the fact that the man said that it was the one who healed him who told him to carry his bed. Of course, if someone heals you after thirty-eight years, you are going to do what they say. But the Jews just want to know who is telling him to break the Sabbath. Their hyper-focus / legalism seems to be the real problem.
And verse 12 says, “John 5:12 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?" “
I am working on John 5 right now. I found something interesting in verses 11 and 12. Verse 11 says, “ But he answered them, "The man who healed me, that man said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'"”
or maybe it is a new update 😃
Quick question. Is anyone having trouble with the app? I find that when I try to type a verse in stage 1 (where the text is supposed to be there to look at) the text starts flashing as soon as I start typing. I remember when this didn’t happen, but it has been doing it for a long time. Is it just me?
And just to clear up any confusion, this group is to study John, and all of John is posted, so there is no reason to need to add any more verses.
Hi everyone, I am back. I got a bit overwhelmed over the holidays and had to take a break. It happens sometimes. Sorry about that.
Why are you leaving the group, David?
thank you all for everything you have done and encouraging me I am sad to say that I am officially retiring from this group if you'd like to contact me or talk to me again please join my group is Genesis history? Or enjoying the way of Jesus blessings to all in Christ David
oh and little house could you make it so that I can add versus thank you all again:)
Welcome to our newest member, Gina. Feel free to jump in anytime. We are open to chatting and to interesting discussions about John.
Susan, That is an interesting point you make about how the Pharisees reacted when they found out that John was baptizing. I never thought of that before. It makes sense that the questions that they asked John would be questions that they would have at least wondered about in relation to Jesus. (Whether or not they actually asked them of Jesus.).
7puppies is right. I am in a few different groups. Someone asked my name in one of the groups and it must have carried over. So I will introduce myself. Hi, I am Tracy. It is my real name, but it is also a very common name for people my age.
Also, Susan, chances are that Littlehouse and David are in more than one group together, having discussions we can't see. One thing I've noticed around here is the different expectations. Kids tend to treat these conversations almost like phone calls, where each person is obligated to respond until someone ends the conversation. Adults, on the other hand, treat these conversations like a bulletin board, or notes left on the kitchen table; you read them when you find them and respond when you feel like it. Personally, I've been treating this as a help line of sorts, only remembering to check out the wall when something stumps me. Though since everyone else here is fairly chatty, I like to jump into the few conversations I see in time. ;)
Hmmm... Veri interesting points, Susan, and very helpful. So just how familiar with the prophecies were the disciples and pharisees? Were they expecting a warrior king because they didn't know what the scripture said, because they intentionally twisted it for their own purposes, or because they didn't recognize that many of the prophecies were talking about Jesus?
One of the outcomes of keeping as low a profile as possible and limiting direct conflict with the pharisees was that it postponed the time when Jesus would be arrested and crucified. That needed to happen specifically when it did, at Passover, in God’s timing. That Jesus was crucified at Passover was very, very significant. Passover is the Jewish celebration of the Angel of Death “passing over” the homes of the Israelites and striking the Egyptians instead when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt. The reason the angel passed over the Israelite homes was because they had sacrificed lambs and smeared their blood on the doorposts of their homes. This event foreshadowed Jesus’ death on the cross. He is the sacrificial lamb, and His blood protects us from eternal death just as the lambs’ blood protected the Israelites’ from physical death.
The other thing I think about is what happened with John when the pharisees found out how much HE had been baptizing—they sent and asked him if he was the Christ (or Elijah or the Prophet) (back in John 1). When he said that he wasn’t, they asked him why he was baptizing then. So to me, that indicates that since the pharisees regarded John’s baptisms as a possible statement of Divinity, they may have been wondering the same thing with respect to Jesus. I think they felt both curiosity and antagonism. They didn’t WANT Him to be the Messiah, because He didn’t act in the way they wanted and they worried about conflict with the Romans, but they also wondered if He was making a statement. Of course, the result of all this withdrawing is that Jesus became known to a wider range of people including Samaritans and gentiles. 😄
7puppies, there are a couple of things that stick out to me in thinking about why Jesus left. The first is that Jesus regularly withdrew when people started to notice Him. Happened again and again throughout the Gospels, and this was a fulfillment of prophecy. Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 42:2: “He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street” and Matthew 12:15-19 referenced this prophecy with respect to Jesus. “Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah….He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.” So we know that the disciples considered that Jesus’ actions in keeping a low profile was a direct fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy
David, I am not a kid either. I have kids of my own in college
Okay, so I totally don't get it! How do you know each other's real names?
7Puppies, I am still thinking about your second question. I will get around to answering it soon. Do you (or anyone) have any thoughts about the first answer?
I’m pretty sure that Zachary is a kid, and maybe 7puppies. I’m pretty sure that Susan is not a kid.
so you're not a kid.how old is Zachary?
David, lets just say that I am probably older than your mom and younger than your grandmother. ;)
it is called the way of Jesus
ok thanks will you join my group?
Hi David, I am the leader of this group. Welcome.
Let’s start with the first question. Why didn’t Jesus baptize? I have heard a lot of speculation about this over the years, but let’s be clear, we don’t really know why. Some (many) scholars think that if Jesus had baptized it would have set up a hierarchy of disciple (Jesus followers, not just the 12). If you could say that Jesus baptized you, you would be more important than someone whom Peter baptized. This is the most common answer that I hear to this question, but I am sure that there are others.
please join my group its the way of Jesus
Who is the leader of this group?
hi I am going to give this group I try
I mean it seems a little 'I know that you know that I know that you are known by him who knows what she knows about me, you know what I mean?' Seriously though, was Jesus afraid they'd get angry and kill him too soon, or what?
So in chapter 1ish, 2ish, John says, "When Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was making and baptizing more disciples than John, (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left"... where he was and went someplace else. Q1) Why didn't Jesus baptize? Q2) Why does it matter what the pharisees knew?
Thanksgiving is awesome, but we still have turkey in the fridge. :P Turkey is great- four times a week. Maybe we should cook less next year.
Josh, Happy (late) Thanksgiving to you too.
Also, thank you for the verse, I was looking for something to write out for my Secret Sister (a program that our church does), and this was perfect!
Thanks Susan, we had a very nice Thanksgiving.
Hope you all had wonderful Thanksgivings!
How about Philippians 4:6?
How about favorite verses about Thankfulness? I don’t have any coming to mind. I will have to look some up.
Anyone have any great plans for Thanksgiving? We will be visiting family, but they live less than an hour away. It will be a big family party and we will get to see some people that we only see a couple of time a year.
Super great points about meditation, Little House! That all works the same way for me, too😊
I haven’t done 14 or 15 or even 9 yet, but I have not learned the chapters in order. It is fine to work on the ones that seem interesting to you. It is all God’s Word.
I have to agree with Susan on memorizing longer passages. It makes it easier to rack up points, but it is also useful for life. The Bible says to meditate on God’s Word day and night. For me, typing a chapter is meditating on it. When I know a chapter, typing it helps me to see parts I didn’t before, and sometimes God just points out a verse or two to me. And even when I don’t have Scripture Typer in front of me, those verses are in me an come out when I need them.
Ok thanks and hello is for more verses i have had it but never did any thing with it plus i already memorized like 150 verses so it will double just will take a week or two
You might also give John 9 a try.
Josh, even though I know that it seems a lot easier and faster to just look for all the short verses and memorize those, I think that in the long run you will be better off memorizing verses in passages, even if the passages are only a few verses long. The reason why is that later on, after you begin to remember the verses well, you will be able to review those verses as groups and not have to stop after every verse. For me, if I am reviewing a chapter that I already know really well, I can really fly through the review by typing just the first letter of every verse and then going automatically to the next verse so that I don't have to keep stopping. I can get through a long chapter in just a few minutes like that. Also, I just find that I remember the verses better if I memorize them in chunks instead of by individual verses because I have context--the words of the previous verse help me remember what's coming up in the new verse. If you are looking for "easy" verses, then I find the ones associated with stories to be easier to remember. Also, I found John 14 and 15 pretty easy because of the imagery.
