Oops, should of course be "verse 31"
with a coda like verse 31, couldn't wait till tomorrow.
This chapter resonates with me because as a young Christian, I remember watching the film "Chariots of Fire" in which the actor Ian Charleson in the role of Eric Liddell reads from Isaiah 40, in a scene set at the Scots Kirk in Paris. The scene is interspersed with shots of athletes racing at the Olympic Games, while Liddle is reading.
He famously refused to run in his best event because the heats for it took place on a Sunday.
The Isaiah 40 passage was chosen by the film-maker, David Putnam to contrast eternal things with ephemeral things: even gold medals, which the world treasures so much.
Another reason I like Isaiah 40 is because, verse 41 is mentioned in a U2 song, "Drowning Man", a lesser known track on their 1983 album, "War", which I particularly like.
I'm enjoying using this app. it's super helpful.
