Is anyone current in this group? I haven't been on in a while.
working on reviewing old verses rather than starting anything new for now
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 everyone! Kinda got off-track with memorizing for a while but hopefully can be more consistent now.
Hey Guys I haven't posted in a while:)
So I am back to try again. Don’t know how often I will post, but will be here whenever I find something interesting to share. I just did some calculating and found that if a person memorizes 3 new verses a day, they will have memorized the entire book of John in about 10 months. I am not sure that I can add 3 new verses a day, but since I am familiar with so much of John, I bet that I can average that much...
it’s going good! some kids from my church and I practice it every Sunday!
So how is everyone doing? Susan, did you get to work on 10 and 11>. Ketterpeller, how is 15 going? I am still stuck on 5, but still trying.
I kinda got off track for a little while and am trying to get back into it. Trying to get a little more fluent in 10 and 11.
I’m curious what everyone is working on. I seem to be stuck on chapter 5. How about you?
Hi everyone, Welcome to all our new members.
I meant to say Great Job! Not sure if it came out that way...
Wow Wit! 8 chapters is a lot, and it takes a lot to keep them up. If you have any insights into what you are learning, we would love to hear it!
hey everyone, I’ve been trying to memorize John for awhile. I got to chapter eight before I fell off the wagon. I’m attempting to relearn 7-8 again.
7Puppies, you are probably right about cleaning stuff out... one of these days I will get around to it.
Hey Everyone, I wanted to share a program that I am a part of. It is Tyndale’s rewards club. Tyndale is a Christian publisher and you can earn points in the club by taking surveys and things like that. I have gotten several free books in the past through the program. Right now I am trying to save up enough points to get a commentary on the book of John. If you are interested in joining, check out this link: https://www.myreaderrewardsclub.com/login?pc=3ebu-jhkv-kxh3-66yg It will give you 25 points to start and that is enough to get some of the free stuff...
chapter 17, what about you? I've been working on it for a long time and I finally have it memorized!
Hi KeterPeller, what part of John are you working on now?
Also, LittleHouse, this group seems to be getting rather... spam-chatty. Maybe you could clean out ad comments, comments exclusively for greetings and farewells, and other nonessentials/nonsense? Including this post, of course. :)
Or maybe that makes no sense.
Susan, what if 'the door' refers to the opening, rather than or in addition to the blocking part of the door?
Susan, I have jumped around some in John, but have not yet done 10. I will try to look at it in the next couple of days.
I like to join groups that are studying the same thing that I am. Maybe when I get around to studying Genesis again I will join your group David.
please join bible101, anyone who joins gets placed on the admin role so that you can all add your own verses!
just in case you don't know who this is this is David the boy with the Qualla profile picture anyway it would have to be two years since I last spoke to you?
hello little house please join my group called is Genesis history? Or join intercessory prayer
Been working on chapter 10. Love all the imagery in this chapter! Jesus describes Himself as both the Door and the Shepherd (in contrast to others whom He describes as thieves and robbers, as well as hired hands who care nothing for the sheep). Then there are the sheep (us) and the gatekeeper (who is He? God? The Holy Spirit? Or is it Jesus Himself again? Because even though the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all One, they also have different roles. So I’ve been trying to match the role of a gatekeeper to one of the Three. And then, I get how Jesus can be both the Shepherd and the Door, because I believe that in Bible times, the shepherds would block the openings in the sheepfolds with their bodies. But how can Jesus be both the Door and also go in through the door? I guess I could just go with, “they are different metaphors” and leave it at that, but I feel like there is more of a connection that I am just not getting. Any ideas, anyone?
I am so sorry I have to leave 🙁
The words flash on stage 1 for me, too. I think it is a glitch in the programming.
In verse 12 the Jews totally ignore the fact that the man said that it was the one who healed him who told him to carry his bed. Of course, if someone heals you after thirty-eight years, you are going to do what they say. But the Jews just want to know who is telling him to break the Sabbath. Their hyper-focus / legalism seems to be the real problem.
And verse 12 says, “John 5:12 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?" “
I am working on John 5 right now. I found something interesting in verses 11 and 12. Verse 11 says, “ But he answered them, "The man who healed me, that man said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'"”
or maybe it is a new update 😃
Quick question. Is anyone having trouble with the app? I find that when I try to type a verse in stage 1 (where the text is supposed to be there to look at) the text starts flashing as soon as I start typing. I remember when this didn’t happen, but it has been doing it for a long time. Is it just me?
And just to clear up any confusion, this group is to study John, and all of John is posted, so there is no reason to need to add any more verses.
Hi everyone, I am back. I got a bit overwhelmed over the holidays and had to take a break. It happens sometimes. Sorry about that.
Why are you leaving the group, David?
thank you all for everything you have done and encouraging me I am sad to say that I am officially retiring from this group if you'd like to contact me or talk to me again please join my group is Genesis history? Or enjoying the way of Jesus blessings to all in Christ David
oh and little house could you make it so that I can add versus thank you all again:)
Welcome to our newest member, Gina. Feel free to jump in anytime. We are open to chatting and to interesting discussions about John.
Susan, That is an interesting point you make about how the Pharisees reacted when they found out that John was baptizing. I never thought of that before. It makes sense that the questions that they asked John would be questions that they would have at least wondered about in relation to Jesus. (Whether or not they actually asked them of Jesus.).
7puppies is right. I am in a few different groups. Someone asked my name in one of the groups and it must have carried over. So I will introduce myself. Hi, I am Tracy. It is my real name, but it is also a very common name for people my age.
Also, Susan, chances are that Littlehouse and David are in more than one group together, having discussions we can't see. One thing I've noticed around here is the different expectations. Kids tend to treat these conversations almost like phone calls, where each person is obligated to respond until someone ends the conversation. Adults, on the other hand, treat these conversations like a bulletin board, or notes left on the kitchen table; you read them when you find them and respond when you feel like it. Personally, I've been treating this as a help line of sorts, only remembering to check out the wall when something stumps me. Though since everyone else here is fairly chatty, I like to jump into the few conversations I see in time. ;)
Hmmm... Veri interesting points, Susan, and very helpful. So just how familiar with the prophecies were the disciples and pharisees? Were they expecting a warrior king because they didn't know what the scripture said, because they intentionally twisted it for their own purposes, or because they didn't recognize that many of the prophecies were talking about Jesus?
One of the outcomes of keeping as low a profile as possible and limiting direct conflict with the pharisees was that it postponed the time when Jesus would be arrested and crucified. That needed to happen specifically when it did, at Passover, in God’s timing. That Jesus was crucified at Passover was very, very significant. Passover is the Jewish celebration of the Angel of Death “passing over” the homes of the Israelites and striking the Egyptians instead when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt. The reason the angel passed over the Israelite homes was because they had sacrificed lambs and smeared their blood on the doorposts of their homes. This event foreshadowed Jesus’ death on the cross. He is the sacrificial lamb, and His blood protects us from eternal death just as the lambs’ blood protected the Israelites’ from physical death.
The other thing I think about is what happened with John when the pharisees found out how much HE had been baptizing—they sent and asked him if he was the Christ (or Elijah or the Prophet) (back in John 1). When he said that he wasn’t, they asked him why he was baptizing then. So to me, that indicates that since the pharisees regarded John’s baptisms as a possible statement of Divinity, they may have been wondering the same thing with respect to Jesus. I think they felt both curiosity and antagonism. They didn’t WANT Him to be the Messiah, because He didn’t act in the way they wanted and they worried about conflict with the Romans, but they also wondered if He was making a statement. Of course, the result of all this withdrawing is that Jesus became known to a wider range of people including Samaritans and gentiles. 😄
7puppies, there are a couple of things that stick out to me in thinking about why Jesus left. The first is that Jesus regularly withdrew when people started to notice Him. Happened again and again throughout the Gospels, and this was a fulfillment of prophecy. Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 42:2: “He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street” and Matthew 12:15-19 referenced this prophecy with respect to Jesus. “Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah….He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.” So we know that the disciples considered that Jesus’ actions in keeping a low profile was a direct fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy
David, I am not a kid either. I have kids of my own in college
Okay, so I totally don't get it! How do you know each other's real names?
7Puppies, I am still thinking about your second question. I will get around to answering it soon. Do you (or anyone) have any thoughts about the first answer?
I’m pretty sure that Zachary is a kid, and maybe 7puppies. I’m pretty sure that Susan is not a kid.
so you're not a kid.how old is Zachary?
David, lets just say that I am probably older than your mom and younger than your grandmother. ;)
it is called the way of Jesus
ok thanks will you join my group?
Hi David, I am the leader of this group. Welcome.
Let’s start with the first question. Why didn’t Jesus baptize? I have heard a lot of speculation about this over the years, but let’s be clear, we don’t really know why. Some (many) scholars think that if Jesus had baptized it would have set up a hierarchy of disciple (Jesus followers, not just the 12). If you could say that Jesus baptized you, you would be more important than someone whom Peter baptized. This is the most common answer that I hear to this question, but I am sure that there are others.
please join my group its the way of Jesus
Who is the leader of this group?
hi I am going to give this group I try
I mean it seems a little 'I know that you know that I know that you are known by him who knows what she knows about me, you know what I mean?' Seriously though, was Jesus afraid they'd get angry and kill him too soon, or what?
So in chapter 1ish, 2ish, John says, "When Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was making and baptizing more disciples than John, (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left"... where he was and went someplace else. Q1) Why didn't Jesus baptize? Q2) Why does it matter what the pharisees knew?
Thanksgiving is awesome, but we still have turkey in the fridge. :P Turkey is great- four times a week. Maybe we should cook less next year.
Josh, Happy (late) Thanksgiving to you too.
Also, thank you for the verse, I was looking for something to write out for my Secret Sister (a program that our church does), and this was perfect!
Thanks Susan, we had a very nice Thanksgiving.
Hope you all had wonderful Thanksgivings!
How about Philippians 4:6?
How about favorite verses about Thankfulness? I don’t have any coming to mind. I will have to look some up.
Anyone have any great plans for Thanksgiving? We will be visiting family, but they live less than an hour away. It will be a big family party and we will get to see some people that we only see a couple of time a year.
Super great points about meditation, Little House! That all works the same way for me, too😊
I haven’t done 14 or 15 or even 9 yet, but I have not learned the chapters in order. It is fine to work on the ones that seem interesting to you. It is all God’s Word.
I have to agree with Susan on memorizing longer passages. It makes it easier to rack up points, but it is also useful for life. The Bible says to meditate on God’s Word day and night. For me, typing a chapter is meditating on it. When I know a chapter, typing it helps me to see parts I didn’t before, and sometimes God just points out a verse or two to me. And even when I don’t have Scripture Typer in front of me, those verses are in me an come out when I need them.
Ok thanks and hello is for more verses i have had it but never did any thing with it plus i already memorized like 150 verses so it will double just will take a week or two
You might also give John 9 a try.
Josh, even though I know that it seems a lot easier and faster to just look for all the short verses and memorize those, I think that in the long run you will be better off memorizing verses in passages, even if the passages are only a few verses long. The reason why is that later on, after you begin to remember the verses well, you will be able to review those verses as groups and not have to stop after every verse. For me, if I am reviewing a chapter that I already know really well, I can really fly through the review by typing just the first letter of every verse and then going automatically to the next verse so that I don't have to keep stopping. I can get through a long chapter in just a few minutes like that. Also, I just find that I remember the verses better if I memorize them in chunks instead of by individual verses because I have context--the words of the previous verse help me remember what's coming up in the new verse. If you are looking for "easy" verses, then I find the ones associated with stories to be easier to remember. Also, I found John 14 and 15 pretty easy because of the imagery.
Hello, Hello! Why do you have two accounts?
hi i am hello also known has Josh P.S. two acounts
thanks for adding should make it easy for me to get to 200 verses( all the short ones)
Some interesting facts about the chapters in John. Chapter 6 is the longest with 71 verses. I think that Susan is working on that right now, it is almost three times as long as the shortest chapters. Chapter 2 and Chapter 21 tie for the shortest at 25 verses each.
I just updated our verses, so now all of John is in the list. We talked a while back about adding 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John. When anyone is ready for me to do that, let me know.
That is a pretty ambitious goal Josh, and yet with consistent work, it should be doable. Let us know when you reach 200.
My goal is 200 by Nov. 26
By the way i have a lot of free time lately so i will jump in verses
When I first started getting online, (almost 15 years ago now), there was a lovely lady on my favorite forum named Little Women. I kinda copied her and went with Little House, and it does come from Little House on the Prairie. I liked it way back then because you couldn’t search google for my posts (a lot of the names were unique enough that a google search would bring up everything they posted, but Little House would produce results of Little House on the Prairie and my posts would be on page 10,000 or something.) I like being invisible (as much as possible) online.
Sorry about the finger Josh, hang in there. It takes time, but it will get better.
Congratulations, Little House! Where does the name "Little House" come from? I keep thinking "Little House on the Prairie!"
Uh oh, Josh. You have had a rough couple of weeks, health-wise! 🤒🤕 Is your finger feeling better?
it is from "Star Wars, The Clone Wars" (he is a main clone)
After being sick last week, my rank had fallen quite a bit. I am happy to say that I am now back in the top 250. My goal is to be in the top 100. I was there once, but it takes a lot of time to maintain that rank. Maybe by this time next year...
Josh, you changed your name. What does CT-5555 stand for?
I think that sometimes I just get ahead of myself. I mean, I don’t even know how to delete old posts (I am pretty sure that it is possible though). So just carry on. Sometimes I just need a reality check.
and i am fine if you delete them i mean i have read them a lot though
yeah brochoduis is not fun i was trying to catch my breath in between every cough
As a newish member of this group, I agree with Susan- going back and reading old posts, even/especially the 'chatty' ones helps me figure out where everyone is coming from. I can see where deleting 'im sick today' exchanges would be helpful, though.
It's kinda strange, actually, how quickly everyone here seems to switch back and forth from the profound to the mundane, and everything in between. It's rather cool, actually, that people in this group can talk about everything and still find time to say profound things.
You make good points. So, for now I will just leave it at maybe someday...
I guess some of the non-Bible posts I'd vote for keeping--I like to know where people are from, etc.
I don't know. Maybe just play it by ear or go more by the number of posts rather than any set amount of time.
I’ve been thinking that at some point I may go back and delete some of our “chatting” conversations, but leave the conversations about the scripture. I in no way want to discourage just talking for fun, but when those conversations get old they are no longer relevant, but the conversations about the scripture would still be relevant if someone wanted to go back and read them. What do you think of this idea. How long should I wait before deleting posts (6 months, a year?).
Me too. I have memorized in 4 different versions over time, and regularly those long-ago versions still come out. In one way, it is very encouraging because it shows how powerful memorization is--how things "stick" even when we haven't reviewed them in a really long time! 😃
Susan, That is interesting. John covers three years, and it is easy to not realize how things changed over those years.
Oh, if you want to change the version, there is a way to do that, and they would still count for the group.
I have been sick too (also bronchitis). Not fun.
Oh, I totally understand the different version thing. I joke that when I quote it comes out King James because that is what I memorized when I was little. In the quizzing program that my kids did, the hardest verse for the kids was John 3:16. In the quoting bee, the crowd would be thinking that it was not fair that verse was so easy, but all the kids would hold their breath for the unlucky one to get that verse. All the kids had learned that verse in many different versions, and to get it out in the right version was always a challenge.
yeah i should have like 1-3 memorized but i always get less than 90% because i did them in New King James not English Standard Version.
Plugging away at 6. Just noticing how much of a transition chapter this--how climactic it is. The people were ready to take Jesus by FORCE to make Him King, but he eluded them. And then, a short time later, many, many of his disciples leave Him because they cannot reconcile the things He is telling them with their expectations of what the role of the Messiah was to be.
Thanks, I hope you are feeling better! How far are you through John?
And hi 7puppies. glad you could join.
Sorry guys I had Broncidus. ( It is a sickness were you can not stop coughing)
Practice makes perfect as they say.
I'm still working through John 1- I know the first 14 verses super well, but after that I pretty much draw a blank. Guess I need to keep practicing!
Thanks, Susan! When I was 7, I needed a username for something and couldn't think of one, so Mom suggested combining my age and something I liked. I kept 7puppies because dumping it would mean coming up with something new, and I have as much trouble with usernames now as I did 10 years ago.
Welcome 7puppies! You sound like a dog lover? Do you have 7 dogs or does your name mean something else?
That's awesome, Little House! I haven't gotten any further in John 6 yet. Still working on review. I haven't had much opportunity in the past few days to be on ST. On Wednesday I will have more time. (I think!!)
I am very close to finishing chapter 4, and am excited about that because I have never done John 4 before.
Good morning everyone! So how is everyone doing? Did you have a good weekend? I’m fighting a cold, but am working on my verses anyway.
I don’t really know, but maybe John is copying Jesus. Jesus spoke in parables a lot. There are many passages in John that really make me think. Maybe if we have to puzzle over something we end up understanding it better.
Thanks! So I just started John 1, and I don't get it- why does John call Jesus 'The Word'? Why not 'The Christ', 'The Messiah' or even just 'Jesus'? It would have been much more clear.
Okay, 7p it is. Welcome to the group.
(I prefer 7p, but I'm not picky.) ESV is fine, but since I couldn't find it posted anywhere, I thought I'd check in case you had some weird version.
Hi 7! (Is it okay if I call you that?). I input the verses in ESV, but when you put then in your own files, you can change them to any version that you want.
Group verses are in ESV, right? (Hi everyone!)
I just added 7 and 8. The last verse of 7 looks really weird. It starts with “[[“ and is not even a complete sentence. I almost deleted the “[[“, but then I looked them up and realized that the rest of the sentence is in 8:1 and the phrase goes to 8:11 where the “]]” are. Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up.
Anyone have any insights on what they are learning? I seem to be stuck at the end of chapter 4 right now.
Just a heads up, I moved a whole chapter to not yet memorized. It will affect our verse count, but it was the right thing for me to do right now. I will eventually add them back, and I am sure that when I get to chapter 11 (the one I moved) it will go much faster than ones I never memorized.
I haven't been "out of action" but have been focusing more on reviewing lapsed verses, most of which aren't in John. I need to get back to John 6--there are SO many verses in that chapter--although most are pretty short.
Well, keep up the memorizing and soon your team will be the "team to beat!"
cool My team got in last but we all started like 4 weeks ago everyone we went against had like 3 years of studing
I have been out of action for a couple of days too. My keyboard died, and there is no way I can do my verses without one. I finally got an old one charged up and useable.
I finished my Quiz I will be more active now
yeah I only have 0 verses because I have a quiz meat. ( seekinghim if you want to find out go to like last weeks posts)
It can be helpful to understand some of the different ways that people use it, so feel free to ask anything.
There is a bit of a learning curve to Scripture Typer, and everyone uses it a bit differently.
Feel free to ask any and all questions. We are happy to help you figure it all out.
hi all-I'm new to this and trying to figure out how it all works!
The time of my last post is correct, but whenever there is an hour difference, I suspect Daylight Savings as the culprit.
The three of us are all in the Eastern Time Zone, but I suspect that the computer is using Eastern Standard Time, while we are still on Eastern Daylight Time.
and are your time zones different on here it says i just chated at 6:24 but it is really 7:24. Did any of you notice that????
And I will not be on but in a week or on monday I will get back up. I don't really care about not getting points because I stay the same place never down only up.
I have some old verses (ones I memorized a year ago) that are coming due. It is two or three chapters in the middle of John. I was thinking of letting them lapse until I get to them again. (I have forgotten them enough that I can’t just type them, it would take several days to get through them all.) So if you see our verses drop that is why.
Yep, He is talking about his death. The Jews thought that he meant the Temple building (they even said that it took 46 years to build it, how could he fix it in three days), but he was talking about his body. I don’t think that his disciples figured it out until after he was raised from the dead. I think that a lot of things made sense for them after he was raised from the dead.
And we are at 650 verses to guys
Is verse 2:19 talking about Jesus' death. (Jesus answered them, " destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up")
hello guys I will be on tonight but not tomorrow. And Welcome SeekingHim!
That is a great point, Little House!! That makes a lot of sense! 😀
I just noticed that we have a new member. Welcome SeekingHim!
Susan, I’ve been thinking about the comment that you made about Jesus answering normal questions with such off the wall answers. I wonder if these comments were so “different” that they helped the disciples (and us) remember them. The gospels weren’t written until after his death, and the writers would naturally remember the more unusual things. Of course, the writers had the help of the Holy Spirt, but maybe this helped too.
Well, I don't usually add many NEW verses each day--a lot of times not any--but I do review a lot. Adding chapters 5 and 6 probably helped my verse count quite a bit.
I suspect that you and Susan are the reason for us moving up so fast. The most I ever add is 6 or 7 verses in a day and some days I only add 1.
No problem Josh! Real life is important. Jumping up in rankings is fun, but it is not the main goal.
Bye the way I may be inactive for 6 days because I have a bible quiz so I have to study really hard for that. Ok thanks guys I will try to be on but don't be surprised when I jump down verses. But then I have the next week off so I will make up for my inactivity thanks again and see you soon. (: !!!!!
Ok Little House turns out we are almost at 650 less than a week ago you said you guys were at 473 verses
Maybe me deleting 5 messed you up. The system will figure it out, but it sometimes takes a while.
I decided to just delete verse 4 from the text.
It turns out that the ESV leaves that verse out, as does NIV. NKJV has it in. I actually had to pull a paper copy of my ESV Bible off the shelf in order to figure it out. ESV includes verse 4 as a footnote, but not as part of the text. (It says, “for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had”)
My thing is really gliching it says I am unranked and on the leader board it does not show where i am
now there is just no verse 4
and yeah that is one of my verses pretty easy to memorize.
almost 650 verses guys we are at 642 verses. ( mainly to you guys)
I was trying to figure out what was wrong with verse 4.
And my picture got mest up again
Yeah under 11000th place now I just reviewed all the verses
I am going to check on 5:4 and see what is going on.
Wow, you are making a lot of progress. Cool!
we are at 600 verses. ( mainly to you guys)
By the way verse 5:4 says "verse text not found"
No problem. For some reason, I thought that I had already added all of John. Oh well, I added 6 and will try to get the rest added this week.
Yeah there is no five or six the chapters You guys are near. I am still on 2
I have John 1-5 down pretty well, and then some of the middle chapters, but I don't have 6. Could you add 6?
Wow Josh, that puts you in the top third of all Scripture Typer users (by points), and in only a few weeks too. Way to go. Won’t be long and you will be in the top 10,000!
Sure, lets do 1 John and 2 John and 3 John as well. But like you said, when we get there. I am only on Chapter 4 of John. (I have memorized some of the middle chapters before though, so they may go faster. But we have quite a ways to go to get there. (I will add First, Second and Third John whenever anyone is ready for them, just let me know.)
when we get there will we do 1 john 2 john and 3 john
sorry for not review yesterday fridays are my off day
Yeah, Little House, I think you are right about John 11--that Jesus means His appointed time to die has not yet come, but obviously the disciples don't get it--Thomas essentially says, "Well, let's go and die with him." What I don't understand is why... Is it that Jesus knows they won't understand at the point but will later on after He is raised from the dead and then it will strengthen their faith? And/or ours? One thing about metaphors is that they are good vehicles for carrying multiple layers of meaning, which God does a lot. And now that I think of it, it is not only Jesus in the NT, but God uses metaphors a TON in the OT as well.
Josh, you are doing great for someone who just joined three weeks ago! I am from Massachusetts.
Back to the woman at the well, Susan, you make a good point about her changing the subject. I have a teenager who does that all the time, but I didn't see it here. I think that you are right and that she is probably trying to move the focus of attention.
I memorized John 11 a few years ago and I remember that passage giving me a lot of trouble. It is hard to memorize what you do not understand. The funny thing is that when you type a chapter everyday for weeks at a time, it is like meditating on it. After a while it begins to make more sense. But that one, I think that he was saying that it is not his time yet, but then all the stuff about the light of the world. I can't wait to get there again.
Susan, the words that Jesus says sure do make a person think. You are right about the metaphors. If even Jesus didn't say things out-right, what should we be saying. It does require some more thought. Good point.
i am from PA I joined like 3 weeks ago
One reason why I think is that it encouraged His apostles, and us, to think through what He says a little more deeply--engage with it a little more....
And a lot of what He says to the apostles He does not seem to explain at all-at least, it's not recorded that He does. I was reviewing John 11 yesterday, and really noticing verses 9 and 10. The disciples had just asked Jesus if He really was planning to go back to Judea when the Jews had just been seeking to stone Him, and He answers, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of the world...." and doesn't respond to their question at all in any kind of straightforward way. So I'm wondering, "Why?" And what are the implications for us today?
Imagine sitting down to eat with someone who regularly answers "regular" comments like, "Eat something!" with answers like, "I have food to eat that you do not know about!" And then, He does go on to explain, but still!
But I have thinking a lot these past few days how much teaching Jesus does in metaphors. I mean, it is something that I have been aware of for a really long time but I just have been wondering more about the implications for us today. In Matthew, it talks about Jesus not doing ANY teaching that was not couched in a metaphor. And even with His disciples, so much of what He says starts out as a metaphor EVEN when IMMEDIATELY afterwards, He explains the metaphor! Hmmm....
Ha! I was just reviewing that same passage just now! I think she is changing the subject on purpose--topic is getting a little uncomfortable for her! But I also agree with you that she is feeling Him out. I think she's actually asking Him a little later, in a kinda sideways fashion, if He is the Messiah. And she is the first person that is recorded in John that Jesus directly tells that He is the Messiah. And she is both a woman and a Samaritan. And He tells her directly instead of framing it in a metaphor. Very cool, I think!
I have puzzled of the 19th and 20th verses of John 4. They say, "The woman said to him, 'Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.'" Jesus has just told her stuff he shouldn't know, so it makes sense that she would say that he is a prophet, but were did the stuff about where to worship come from. It seems like a total subject change. I memorize in ESV, so I looked this up in other versions to see if that would help. The message really cleared it up for me, it says that the woman says, "Oh, so you’re a prophet! Well, tell me this: Our ancestors worshiped God at this mountain, but you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place for worship, right?" So it is like she is figuring out that he is a prophet, so she is asking him the hardest question that she knows. And I think that it also says something about her culture that a woman like her knows this question. She knows that the messiah is coming and the disputes between Samaritans and Jews, even if she isn't living a 'proper' life.
I joined right about the time they started the point rankings. I was very active for a year or so, and then took a long break only popping in every few months. I like watching my point ranking rise, but I have to be careful not to obsess about it. I really want to memorize John, and the points keep me motivated. Part of the reason that I started this group is to help me keep the focus on the Scripture.
I just checked, you are currently #46 out of over 50,000 users. That is crazy high, like the top 0.1%. You are awesome.
Susan, If you are using the app, go to the home page and click on statistics, and then rankings. On the rankings page in the upper right hand corner it will either say points or verses, click on that and it will change to the other one.
How long have you been using ScriptureTyper? What states are you from? I don't actually know how to track my verse ranking. When I first started, there was no such thing as a point ranking but now that's the only kind of ranking I see!
Sorry for the double post. I know why my computer (iPad) did it, but I don't know how to get it not to. Sigh.
Which Bible Quiz program do you do? What church is it with? My kids did Bible Bowl (with the Curch of Christ/Christian Churches) for several years, but we quit a few years ago. There was a lot of emphasis on memorizing useless facts. I think that my daughter can still name all the men in John Chapter 1. But it did all of my kids a lot of good, they know their Bibles in a way that most kids don't.
all of the easy short ones and then John 1:1-26
We are at 550 verses. ( mainly to you guys ) But I learned 56 verses today
yeah it is central PA and mine is through a christian school but we play only churches. if you join The Brotherhood it is in there kind of special bible.

Keep on reviewing and your rank will fly up. Reviewing daily will make a big difference. I am really happy with my rank right now. I have moved up about 25 places in the last month. You probably do that in one day, but the number of points between ranks increases as you move up. I hope to someday be in the top 100, but it will probably take several more months or even a year.
We are so close to 550 verses. We will be better off when we start John in school and I have to memorize this. Right now it is for fun. Because I have learned 130 verses in the last 3 weeks.
We are at 501 verses good job guys.
( mainly to you guys)
Yeah I watch my ranking. 4 days ago I was 165 points. Now I am 2167 points. You get so many more points from reviewing so I review like 75 verses a day. Some for Bible class (10-12 a week), some for Bible Quiz team (50-100 a week). I am learning first and second corinthians for bible quiz team. Bible quiz team is every month we face off with 10-12 other churches and are quized on 1-2 corinthians that is why I have to learn so many verses. I created a group for learning it. It is called " The Brotherhood" .
How about you Josh, do you watch your ranking? Verses of points?
Susan, Do you track your ranking? If so, do you focus more on points or verses? I find it motivating to keep an eye on my point ranking, but I move around a lot in the verse ranking. (I will occasionally reset a chapter to 'not yet memorized'). I do however have a general idea where I am with that ranking too.
Josh, What scriptures are you working on?
Yeah. I don't actually want to disable them because I do want to learn them, but associated with the longer passages rather than with each individual verse.
I can disable them on the computer. Meaning references.
I use an iPad with a keyboard. I am not very good with touch screens either.
Do you use a keyboard or a touch screen. I have a small keyboard for my iPad, I couldn't do it with a touch screen.
I find that sometimes when I am typing the first letter, I accidentally type the second as well. Or sometimes I will type n for a word like "know." But overall it is a lot faster and easier.
Oh, you are right about the references. There are a few that I just know, but not too many.
Little House, I really like memorizing the longer passages too--for a number of reasons. I agree with you about it being helpful for context. Also, I find it helps me better understand the timeline of when things took place. And of course, it's nice not have to keep track of all those pesky references (my hardest thing to remember!)
the first letter thing is a lot easier
This will be good to because this year in Bible we are studying the gospels
I do not see that is that for the phone or computer
If you would like to try to type the first letter of each word (it can take some practice to get used to it), scroll down to the bottom of your page and click on preferences (it should be in the leftmost column under Scripture Typer). When that page opens, there are lots of options that you can change and how you type is there. I switched over to the webpage so that I could see what you see. If it is not exactly right, hopefully it is close enough for you to figure it out.
It can be frustrating when people pull stuff out of context and John 3:16 is probably the most used (out of context) verse. The good news about John 3:16 is that the context doesn't really change the meaning, it just enhances it.
And I don't have a type the first letter mode
hi guys thanks a lot John 3:16 in my bible group is taking out of context so much it is anoyying
One thing I really like about memorizing whole passages is that I really get the context of the passage. I knew that John 3:16 came while Jesus was talking to Nicodemus, but reading (typing) it over and over really brings it home. Today I was typing in John 4 some verses about sowing and reaping. These are smack dab in the middle of the story of Jesus and the woman at the well. I wonder if the fact that he is in Samaria influences this discussion of sowing and reaping. Like he wants to point out that sowing and reaping (of people) can happen to people other than Jews. Hmmm.... I need to think on this one some more (and maybe finish the chapter).
Hi Susan, I too type the first letter of every word. This is the second or third time that I have tried to do John. This time I am up to chapter 4. I type 1-3 every day and then I type all of 4 that I know. I have been adding a few verses every day or two. I think that when I get to chapter 5, I may not type 1 every day. I do like the points that I get from it, but there are only so many hours in a day.
My strategy is the "type first letter of every word" approach. I like it because it's so much faster that I can review a lot more Scripture than I would be able to otherwise!😊💪🏻🔥
Hi Little House! I love John! I have started to memorize it so many times but have never yet made it to the end.... Maybe now will be the time!
I would also love to hear how you study and how you use Scripture Typer.
You are welcome to post your own thoughts on any part of John, but you don't have to.
New members are always welcome.
As I was working on the passage where Jesus turns water to wine, I realized something. The stone water jars that Jesus has the servants fill with water are not that big. I have seen them pictures as large jars (four or five feet high), but they only held twenty or thirty gallons. We have a twenty gallon fish tank and it is not that big. These jars were probably only 2-3 feet high.
A couple of times in the first 4 chapters of John he mentions hours. The 10th hour (when the two decibels join Jesus) and the 6th hour (when he was at the well). So today I looked up what times these were by our clocks. It turns out that there were are a couple of different possibilities. One is that the hours are counted after noon (so the 10th hour would be 10pm and the 6th hour would be 6pm). The other (more likely) explanation is that the hours are counted from sunrise. Since sunrise changes the exact time would change some too. (Daylight lasts 4 hours longer on the longest day than on the shortest day.) But whatever time of year, the 10th hour would be late afternoon-early evening, and the 6th hour would be the middle of the day (11am-1pm).
The other thing that impressed me was how easily John gave up being in the spotlight. He not only let his disciples go to Jesus, he pointed them in that direction. When his disciples got jealous of the crowds that Jesus was attracting, John told them that this was a good thing. John gracefully passed the baton to Jesus. I can see two levels where we can do the same. We should point people to Jesus. When the time comes to let someone else have our role or job, we should remember that all we do is for the glory of God. "He must increase, but I must decrease."
Last night, as I was typing John 1, I realized that John did not know who Jesus was until Jesus was baptized. God had told him that the spirit would descend and remain on the "one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit," but until that point he didn't know who it was. Now, he did "jump" in his mother's womb before he was born (when Mary with the unborn Jesus appeared), so there must have been some recognition. But, as an adult, he did not know until Jesus's baptism.
I really like the competition that the leader boards provide. I find typing 2-4 chapters a day gives me a lot of points, and I really like it when I can move up a spot or two. I find that the completion keeps me motivated. I also find that reviewing the same chapters over and over is a way of meditating on them. I often learn something new.
I use a combination of methods to learn and review scriptures, and they change on a regular basis. Right now, I am typing (first letter of each word; using a keyboard) John 1-3 everyday. I am also working on John 4, adding a few verses when I seem ready. I am also working on the top 100 verses, but I am using a different method for those. I add one new verse everyday and review them as Scripture Typer brings them up. I spend 30-60 minutes most morning, and sometimes I get in a second session or two.
I know that everyone uses Scripture Typer in a different way. Tell me about how you use it. Do you type the first letter of each word or the whole word? Do you use the feature that lets you record and listen to a verse? Do you draw pictures? Do you review on your own schedule or do you follow the review schedule that Scripture typer provides? How do YOU do it?
I am going to post what I am learning from the book of John and I invite you to join me. I would love to hear what you are learning.
Hi! Welcome to the group.
